I've never felt any apprehension except once. The Boston harbour area. As usual my directions were garbage, and I couldn't find the street I was looking for. Hey, there's a big parking lot with some guys in the back row, maybe they can help me out. Well, I bobtail on back there, when I notice everyone of these guys has a red bandana on. First words out of my mouth were, "I don't care what you guys are doing, I just need to find this street". One guy told me where to go, his directions were right.
Of course, I'm used to Detroit, it's no big thing.
And Jefferson down by the bridge is nothing, that's a main road down there.
Main thing is, don't go around looking like a victim, chances are pretty good no one will bother you.

Norwalk, Ca.
Had a cop roll up and tell me "your gonna be out of here at 3:30, right?" I replied "we're just about done here.". And he repeated "your gonna be out of here at 3:30, right?". On the way out I looked around and decided the cop was right. -
Your exactly right...
Many on here watch way to much TV...fear for fear sake....
Judging others as being 'bad'...who haven't even done a thing to you...Once again...much could be learned from this thread about perception...and how it effects peoples 'reality'....
Which in turn is a myth....most people live by 'myth'...and not reality...johnday Thanks this. -
Don't worry, it hasn't changed that much. The Ambassador bridge is still a piece of work, layout wise, and trucks are still being routed down either Fort St, which has potholes big enough that you could use truck tires to fill them, which takes you to I-75 South, or down Rosa Parks Blvd, which takes you to I-75 North, I-96 or I-94. The only thing that's really changed, Michigan State Police like to have commercial vehicle enforcement sitting around there, to catch you for things like stop signs and yellow light violations. Small wonder just about everybody I talk to wants a new bridge to take us directly onto the highway.

The abandoned buildings, the panhandlers, the bad streets (Detroit doesn't like to fix streets in that area, apparently.), it hasn't changed very much. Other then the new duty free store.

east coast, narrow streets and its low bridges. Fl and its drivers that have more money then brains.

2 toughest neighborhoods I have been to were Youngstown Ohio, and on the southside of Chicago.
The Chicago stop, as part of their directions included "turn right at the burned out crack house"!
At Younstown, I was specifically told NOT to spend the night in their lot. I got there early, and the owner got out of his car wearing a 9mm, and the shipping clerk pointed to each building on the street to tell me who had been shot and when. -
While there are a few incidents i can recall about major cities ive driven in and been "on guard" more than usual, I'd have to say the city i live in, Salisbury NC, makes the top of my list. Ive lived in detroit{most of family is from there or chicago} so i kinda feel comfortable there, or at least not paranoid.
I live about 3O min north of charlotte and this city has taken a turn for the worse.
I would also say that if your a giver and genuinely care for other people, the scenarios people have described would more or less be more sad than scary. I say the term "giver" because %99 of "those people" just want you to give them something.
We have a population of about 3Ok and we have a crime and violent crime rate worse than cities like Denver,Co. -
As someone who lives in Flint, MI I kinda feel the same way. Like Detroit and Saginaw we are always in the top 5 highest crime rates in the country.
I feel totally safe, mainly because all one has to do is stay away from the gangbangers and drug dealers (Usually the same people anyway) and one is good. Yes random stuff happens, but people randomly get struck by lighting and win the lotto which I feel would be a higher chance of happening.
