    hey everyone,

i started out wanting to driving trucks through prime inc. trucking school, i have been with them now for 4 months now. i really like driving trucks, i've had 3 different trainers and they've all complemented my driving skills. here is my problem, i like being home at least a 4 days for every 3weeks that i am away.
times when i have been home, i try to look into local or dedicated driving jobs, but most companies want 1 yr of driving experience. I dont know if i can be away from home for these extended periods of time much longer, BUT I WANT TO DRIVE. any advise?

Get your experience as you continue to look when home. don't quit and be unemployed and try and look because it will look bad.

For every local job, there are hundreds of drivers that want it. So employers can be picky.
But keep looking. Try the propane companies, the local LTL companies, Heating Oil deliveries, Septic Pumpers...service type companies. They have a harder time attracting drivers because it involves more than driving.
My younger brother decided to get his CDL, wanted to stay local so he got a gig with a propane company. After about a year of filling tanks and doing local deliveries, they started running him on the tractor and tanker setup. He's out one night a week, but local the rest of the time.
There are gigs out there. You just have to look for them.

Your willing to stay out for three weeks and STILL having a hard time finding someone to accommodate the reasonable request of 4 days off? The longest I have ever stayed out is 9 days and that was with Schneider. I can't stay out longer than 5 days now and I'm still OTR with a small company. After you get a year or two you can find a regional company to get you home on the weekends and probably a night or two during the week. Houston is a good place for freight.

It says you're from Houston, TX. If you don't have it already (Tank, HazMat) get it, it's going to be your best bet at a decent local job. Lot of oil and gas hauling out there. But do, at least tough out an even 1 year. It is for your own, and your resume/job applications good.

Sitting at home, lights about turned off. Eating ramen noodles...

OTR ain't that bad after all. Tough it out and get that one year in.

It's good training doing stuff you don't want to do. Part of life.

Then you'll have that gravy local job before you know it. Eight months ain't that far away.
