Yes the official policy is every time before you're ready to back up, grab your qualcomm and select 'freeform message' then type in the letters in sequence" G O A and L then Send and it will ask you to confirm send, you touch Yes.
Evidently upwards of 67% of Swifties are not doing this on a regular basis, I get a weekly message detailing how only 43% of Swifties monitored are following this company policy. Never be too proud to send in GOAL, you could save someone's life, maybe even your own.

GOAL BEEP BEEPscottied67 Thanks this. -
No wonder SWIFT drivers are so slow backing into a spot at a truck stop, didn't realize that had to fart around with the Qual comm first. I will try to be more patient with you folks from now on.

Now for something serious. I go out with my mentor tomorrow and I admit I am nervous. I passed my CDL with good score, but still grind gears shifting. I am trying hard to be good truck driver and will do what my mentor tells me.
Wish me luck, truck driving is a lot harder than I thought, but "Quiting is not an option". I will be a dedicated, safe and dependable truck driver. I will not listen to the negative guys on this forum. I will learn and form my own opinions. I am trying to go into this with a positive attitude regardless of my negative impressions from orientation.
I sure hope that once I get away from the office jockies at the terminal that I can finally be on my own without an office person, mentor or instructor telling me what I can and can't do (also telling me how bad it is). It amazes me how negative some of the office people are and still have a job. People just don't know how lucky they are to have a job in this economy. I think God daily for giving me the opportunity to finally start driving a truck.lord_sixpac, Rattlebunny and scottied67 Thank this. -
Gold, do not be afraid to ask questions, lots of them. You will learn alot during your time with your mentor, but believe me, you will be amazed at what you learn the first couple of weeks solo.
Best of luck to you as you go forward.Gold_Miner and lord_sixpac Thank this. -
About 4 months from now when your shifting is perfect look back reflect back on your post. Then at 6 months you're thinking 'wow my shifting is even better than it was 2 months ago'. It takes about that long to drive all configurations like bobtail, empty trailer, light loaded trailer, medium loaded trailer, heavy trailer, hills, flat, curves etc.
Just like we all read a book from page one, we all drive the truck from the first mile. There are people who feel an uncontrollable urge to pull out their truck driving resume and constantly label the new drivers with derogatory and hateful names, but they started with their first mile once long ago too. The job itself is pretty easy. Stick to the formula others have laid out and all will be good.Rattlebunny, nckid, lord_sixpac and 2 others Thank this. -
Don't feel bad about grinding gears Gold, I'm starting my 4th week with my mentor and have 80 hours left to go and I still grind them when I get tired or stressed and my mentor is sitting next to me lol..Everyday you will become a better driver out there Like Scottied67 and Inkeeper said...Oh and one more thing,,wait till you start backing in truck stops ..You won't even think about the shifting part.lol
nckid, lord_sixpac, Gold_Miner and 2 others Thank this. -
Thanks for all the support. It is a lot to learn and has humbled me a lot.
I do have hope. I have been laid off for two years with no income. Lost my house and all of my vehicles except for an old 1998 jeep. I live in a 32' Montana 5th wheel and have about $400 a month in total bills. My wife got a job in November at a Stripes convenience store, so we are doing better. It will be nice to have an income, because I was almost homeless and on the street.
I worked in Semiconductor Industry for over 20 years and spent 8 years in the Navy on Submarine duty. I was making over 100k a year until 2008. Now I am very humbled and understand what it is like to have nothing. I am starting over at this late stage in my life. Any income trucking provides will be welcomed. I plan on working hard and if I can make 20k my first year, that will be 20k more than I made last year (since my unemployment has run out).
Anyway thanks for all the support you guys have offered me....solarbronco, inkeper, Rattlebunny and 1 other person Thank this. -
Good luck Gold, you are my same age and I am just waiting to have a couple of bucks saved before I apply and embark on the same adventure. It's been rough, I consider myself very LUCKY to be working at a call center making less than 1/2 of what I was making. I hope to get hired by Swift or a good, FAIR, company like it. For what I have read, this is a good company to learn the trade.
Gold_Miner Thanks this.
