Well I know one thing about speeds, USA needs to get with the program. I believe other companies have started upping their trucks. Crete/Shaeffer I used to easily pass at 63, now I can just creep by them and it depends on load and weight. Swift (WTF???) trucks have been passing me, not rapidly but steadily. I don't mean OO or LO trucks either. I mean their standard Volvos and Prostars. When Swift is passing me then I know we are going too slow.

I don't get passed by either. Most of the people that pass me (when I'm empty) are O/O's and some other tankers, and some small companies. But the other day I was passing a Schneider and wasn't passing him as fast as I normally would with the big company trucks.

Yes I think some of the pumpkins were turned up also. I had this discussion with a guy from fuel economy last month. He was saying that he had heard that from other drivers but that Cliff was still wanting to get the overall fleet average MPG up before they considered making any changes. I told him that bottom line is the price of diesel is not going down and that 2-3 MPH would not make that significant of a difference.

In the abstract Clif Beckham is correct in wanting to squeeze every mile possible per gallon from the trucks. A good manager will do this, but a good manager will also try to find a good financially sound happy medium between MPG and driver safety. The general flow of traffic on the interstates in most cases is 65 to 70 urban and 65 to 75 rural. When there is only 2 lanes and you have slow trucks in the right lanes the merging and exiting traffic along with the higher speeds makes for a bit of a dangerous situation. I have seen so many near misses in these situations. Clif Beckham is a pencil pusher with no head for what drivers have to put up with. I know he has a CDL but that is more of a stunt then anything else. I guess all you current USA Truck drivers can do is wait and hopefully he will get forced out.

59???? Our slowest trucks are at 68 and it feels slow at times. 59 is ridiculous and dangerous.

Slower trucks will be the norm as fuel prices continue to increase.
Generally, slower means less fuel consumed. A simple fact of physics.

I am not sure I agree 100% with this. As long as the fuel surcharges keep up with the price I see no reduction in speeds.
