Do I have to have a CDL to drive a semi truck only in the state of Ohio.
I was just told by my insurance agent that I did not have to have a cdl if I stayed in Ohio. I was wondering if this was true.

Your insurance agent along will million others don't know squat about trucking.Does'nt matter what state you reside in,you CANNOT move a semi even a foot without a CDLand especially in Ohio, they hate trucks. Are you just messing with us,lol.

Are you a farmer?
If not then you need a CDL.
If you are a farmer you are probably exempt 100-150 air miles of your base of operations. -
I believe to drive just a tractor you have to have at least a Class B w/ air, don't quote me on that though...
-
You need a CDL if your vehicle weighs over 26,000lbs. In state or not.
As far as the farm laws out there, I am not sure. If you check the DOT website you will find every single little thing you need to know. May take awhile, but it is all in there!
mike6161 Thanks this. -
Thank you all for your help.
I am not a farmer but I am hiring on with a farmer. -
As long as you are just driving from the farm to an elevator within 100 miles of the farm you shouldn't need a CDL.If the farmer has a DOT# you will need to have a CDL but don't have to run a log book as long as you stay within the 100 mile radius.

Wouldn't one of the considerations for needing a CDL be whether the semi is being used in a commercial way? Lots of folks are using class 8 tractors to pull larger 5th wheel rv's.

Again that depends. If the farmer has a DOT number yet is just having you drive for agricultural reasons and is not engaged in any other commercial activities then you usually can drive without a CDL.
