I pulled a step for 5 months with Mercer, now I pull a 48' flatbed. Step was too heavy and had me sitting or deadheading too much. Majority flatbed freight at Mercer, and step was hurting more than it helped. However, many guys do fine with them if they have the right coordinator.

    Deputy,

Most of this is right on, but I'm not convinced another flatbed carrier can do better.

I've been sold on taking loads to bad areas for too low a rate for it to be profitable, called the agent to try to get loaded back out and mostly just sat and heard the crickets. Nobody's got your back. It's all on me. So I have had to severely limit where I will take a load now.

I stay east of I-35, excluding MN, north half of Wi, and south of San Anton. I'm very selective with the Northeast down to Phili. Stay north of I-10 in FL, and no longer do Canada. I'm also not focused on gross pay, I figure net profit instead when shopping for a load on the board. That has me doing a lot of short loads less than 500 miles per day. Those California runs just had me netting a couple hundred per day and less. A lot less after sitting in Ontario for 4 or 5 days only to be offered $1.34.

I personally do not like to sit at truck stops for days on end waiting in line for loads to get down to my position on the board. If I sit , I wanna sit at home.[/QUOTE]

What does be prepared to run mean?

This sounds like a bunch of hyperbole. I'm pretty keen, but not too insecure to admit the freight market is much harder to decryp to prevent ever sitting with no profitable loads. Please enlighten us fools oh great one.

you can call it whatever you want, i call it experience. 32 years of it. what you posted above on post #66 i knew beefore i ever cam to mercer and knew it quite a while before that. my self, the last load i took to calif paid 9200 to truck and weighd 10,000 pounds and reloaded out for 2.00 a mile because no one else could (or would) haul 48,000 out of fresno. that the only reason i went to begin with. other than a load of that nature i stay east and midwest, i also do nyc and long island, it is all dependent upon the rate as to what my NET PROFIT will be. i live near savannah. i also plan my loads myself, the coordinator will call with offers, but no one books freight until i give the ok. i work the loadboard and my wife also checks it regularly.

honestly what you posted above about net profit i learned about 18 years before you started driving, so fool , i hope you are enlightened and you seem to have the same sort of attitude as deputy881 , if ya didnt do over 200,000 last year , you should be quiet and listen. over and out, The Great One.

I'm leased to Landstar, and loving it..... So much better then Mercer. Better rates , better freight and never sit. Way more loads available then Mercer...
