This thread is for all you couples teams out there. From those doing their research to get into it to those who have been sharing a rig for years! This is the place to ask questions of other couples, share experiences, advice for newbies, and useful information for others in this unique situation.
About us: My husband and I are in the "research phase" of looking into team driving OTR. He has driven OTR for about 5 years, but that was back in the 80's. He still has his CDL A and does some local driving on the side. I have been a nurse for the last 18 years and have been pleasantly surprised to find several nurses on here who are now driving! We have an empty nest and have a good grasp on the lifestyle changes that will take place. We lived in our camper for 18 months while we gutted and rebuilt our house ourselves. (and we didnt kill each other!) My hubby has been working at a paper mill for the last 27 years and will be retiring soon. Going OTR is someting that we both want to do as a pre-retirement strategy before full retirement kicks in, maybe 5 to 10 years of driving. Right now our concern is making enough money to replace both our salaries. We have read such conflicting info so far. We plan on buying our own (used) truck and being owner/ops so we can have some decision making power in how often and hard we run. We would like to hear from someone about the benefits/downside to leasing on with a company VS. obtaining our own authority and finding our own loads. Would also like some advice/input on how i should go about getting my CDL. Right now we are thinking that I will go take the written test and get my permit, and then let my hubby train me to take the driving test. Will going that route make it difficult to get on with a company as a second driver?
anyway...Feel free to post away! Share the good, the bad and the ugly! i will be posting here as i find useful information to share with others.![]()

Hi, Thanks for the thread. First I want to do is teach how to link. http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...00-question-husband-wife-teams-out-there.html That is a link to my thread. What you do is, when you are on a page (like this one I'm on now) you move your cursor up to the address bar (up at the top where it says www.thetruckersreport.com) you right click that and a box will open that says copy click copy then go to where you want to paste the link and right click in the body of the message, and click paste. I'll copy and paste a link to this page I'm typing right now. http://www.thetruckersreport.com/truckingindustryforum/newreply.php?p=2764477&noquote=1 HTH.

Hi all- finally made it to Lancaster TX for orientation. Is this ""the thread""? I've been a hot mess these last couple of days getting ready to come here. Wowzaa. Conway orientation will be 5 days and I'll try to post updates so y'all will know what comes after driving school completion. WOW. I wore myself out getting here. I'm looking forward to work so I don't have to pack any more. LOL Starts at 7:15 so better hit it so I'll be bright eyed and bushy tailed in the am! (Really?!? Who wants a bushy tail? Haven't ever understood that saying.

First off with all the new laws and regs coming into play I would wait and see before ya spend the money to buy a truck. I just sold my trucks after 38 yrs of being an O/O and it has to do with new laws and losing two of my best brokers due.to the economy. But if your really set on doing that make.sure u have enough start up capital for those times you have problems and trust me u will.
Drive for a company and see what.life is really like out here remember you together in a small confined area 24/7 and its not easy. Alot of people come out here and think its easy and say ohhh I can do that then find out its a hard life at times. you have idiots in cars, idiots in trucks. Lying dispatchers, late nite or early morning deliveries (reefer side), grumpy shippers and receivers, lot lizards all hours of the nite and the DOT. Take a good look at yourself in the mirror and be.honest and ask yourself is this what I truly want to do and dont be afraid to answer yourself cause only u know.
If your going to team and do it as an O/O get either a new truck or one with under 300,000 miles and still has some warranty left.you will want to run miles and with an older truck with high miles brings problems and never buy a fleet truck cause you dont know how many drivers its had. Lease it to a company at first so u get a good feel of how doing your own authority is done learning from them.
Before you get your own authority do your home work. Get brokers with A+ ratings or go to companies close to your home and ask them if u can haul their freight but go in with a plan of how much u will charge and a guarantee you will deliver on the other end. make it competitive and dont price yourself out of the game. Work with them and prove u can do it. Good Luck and hope u succeed in your goals.Giggles the Original, Lenrod, SavageSam and 1 other person Thank this. -
Make me.....lol
