... OK so at some point I'm looking at the possibilty of getting my own trailer and going independent. Since I'm out of California, I'm looking at a reefer.

Using the USDA produce rate sheet and doing some modeling ... it looks pretty reasonable to be able to maintain a freight rate of $2.00 plus for all miles chasing fruit and produce around the country if you don't mind staying out for awhile and aren't picky about where you run.

What am I missing? I know this is all seasonal and I will be running models for at least a year before I make a move.

    Thanks, M

I am interested to know as well. Looking at your sig it looks like we come from the same field as I have (and still own) a few web development sites that generate a profit daily. So for guys like us being owner operators is not as challenging as a high school dropout who doesn't like to be organized or spend money to make money.

Maybe not but you can't click a mouse to drive your truck either. Check back with me after you have bought that first frozen load of produce......... and I don't even pull reefer.

Tell you what, come see me. I'll arrange for you to handle some chemical reactions if you need a challenge.

If you run on $2.00 a mile you will go broke. I can find loads in vans paying 2.5 to 3.6 everyday.. Is my CSA Score good enough.. What is the cost of insurance? What is the cost of fuel going to be in 2 months.. Can you live without your money for 25 to 60 days? If not can you give a factoring company 3 to 10 % of the revenue? Do you understand policies on large retailers for accepting and rejecting freight.. What is your insurance deductible on that load in the box?

There is a lot that goes into it you can't go into it saying is it that simple.. When you do stuff like that you have the boogie monster bite your rear..

Yeah, produce pays very well at times. But then you get a freeze and all the crops are killed, nothing to haul for 60 days.Or trucks get backed up and it takes you a week to find a load in your area. Remember these farms are usually far away from cities where you unload, so at times mucho dead-heading.Loaded reefers require constant attention. Claims against the trucker are common, and costly at times. You get a load rejected , and you will have it on your trailer for several days until they find a home for it. Schedules are usually very tight. Running a legal log can be impossible. These receivers will not listen to your being an hour away from their dock, and you tell them you are out of hours, and need to stop for a while. There is money to be made in hauling produce, but it is un-sure and takes a lot of work.

Simple? LOL...I think he might be better off staying in management. Down here on the ground floor and being the person they always blame is a whole different story.

The USDA report is for the past week,in produce things change fast. Sometimes daily. Also the rates given are averages that the shipper pays, not the produce broker. Be prepared for uninsured claims,it's part of it.

I don't think that's what he said at all. Perhaps try not being so sensitive. People like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Richard Branson dropped out of school only to become some of the richest people in the World. The results aren't typical though, and it is a proven statistic that h.s dropouts tend to lead a harder life than people that have a 4 year degree.

Sure no problem. After programming a new ticketing system for my local airport I find everything else to be sinple in comparison.
