You can use the jake brake in winter conditions if you're careful about it. A low setting with a heavy load over the drives with the axles locked probably won't cause any traction loss. Helps if your drives aren't bald either.

I worked for Marten and there are good and bad points with them. Be aware of one thing right out of the gate, if you are late for an appointment they will reduce your mileage by 2-3 cents. Depending on who your FM (dispatcher) is, it may a good experience for you but be prepared to sit around (at places such as Walmart, Kroger and a few others). Oh! And getting home maybe an issue also........good luck!

This job would be great if road service would answer the phone. I've been sitting here since 8am at Flying J in Altoona, IA. I have an antifreeze leak, caused by a stuck thermostat. Too much pressure was introduced to my lines and caused a leak. It took them until 5pm to get the repairs started.

I called Road service on my phone. I had Flying J's Boss Shop call the same number. I was on hold while they got through AFTER I called. My FM had today off, so I'm having a long chat with him tomorrow to determine wether or not I bother driving anymore.

My income has been dog #### since moving back to PA. I'm not getting miles anymore and I keep breaking down. Now... breaking down happens... but I shouldn't be sitting all day just to get them to authorize me to get into a bay. This is stupid. Now... by the time they get me out, there won't be any parking left for me to sleep. ARGH.

I'm also thinking about trying to find a legal way out of my AIT truck school loan and put this crap behind me and forget I was ever a trucker. I got lied to. I was promised 35k a year. I only got 18k before taxes for 13 months of work with Knight... who also lied and never paid me for my student loan like they promised. Now with Marten, I spend far too much time in shops.

I already got a job offer at a grocery store, starting at 11-12 bucks an hour 30-40 hours a week. This would mean I'd be home every day and I could bang my girlfriend every night instead of once a month for "trucker money"

Yea these big garbage haulers will run you through the ringer. People will never get it, all they do is listen to some fata•s preach the recruiter referral bonus BS and the cycle never ends. I know you would enjoy "Trucking done right" but you have to find those jobs on your own.

To a point I wouldn't blame you at all to take the grocery job there Smaggs.
I've been home for just over a month for medical leave. I am loving it & don't know if I am going back out either. I am looking around here fo a couple of local positions & been talking to a tow truck operation too.
I know you'll come up with a good plan.. it might take a few months to find your niche of what you want.
What ever you do don't give up your CDL on your next license change or renewal. You never know when they might come in handy for you.
Also have you thought of looking at your local school system for sub route on a bus?
Their union here with some killer benifits. The pay isn't great. But the insurance is good. That way after a morning or afternooon run you can still do something like pick your BASS & stilll be happy in life with your girl.
    Just a thought for ya.

Sorry for any typos I may have made.. This keyboard keeps leaving letters out & I don't always catch 'em.

That is exactly what I did a year ago. Although it does take a while to get used to your load screaming, spitting, biting, mooning, and making out with each other on a regular basis.:biggrin_25519:
