I'm thinking of getting a inverter generator some where in the 3,000 watt range and hooking up a small 1500 watt space heater and on really cold nights possibly the block heater. I would like the generator to run a max of 12 hrs between refueling it. However, the generators I have seen pulling that kind of load would come no where near that length of time. I have also seen ways you can hook up a 6 gallon marine gas tank and extend how long it will run. On a boat or at a construction sight legality isn't a real problem, however, when it comes to Dot can it be done legally.

If it isn't legal what have you done to lower/eliminate the idling in your pickup and still stay warm while sleeping in the passenger seat.

Look into an espar heater system. The cab heater is about 1400.

The fmcsa has a rule about portable heaters.

I have seen plenty of hotshot drivers in the 4 wheeler section of truckstops with the 2000 to 4000 watt generators. Some of them do have the 6 gallon marine tank set up for extended run times too. I have the 2000 watt Honda that will run almost 8 hours on one gallon of gas at low idle or almost 5 hours on high idle. Not that big a deal to get out and top it off after a few hours, afterall, have to go in to use the restroom anyway....

Why not use an inline cabin heater that runs off your diesel tank. Webasto makes nice heaters that dont take up much room. Just an idea

Yes my dually is a diesel. I was looking at this http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200482994_200482994

Being an inverter generator not only can it charge my battery (should I need it) it also should put out enough watts to power a small space heater and my block heater. Naturally I won't being using all 3 at once, and hopefully not charging my battery at all, but nice should i need to. And being an inverter generator it is stable enough to power my laptop.

The other heaters are interesting also. Will check them out.

That one is gas powered, the link I posted was diesel, you wouldn't have to carry gas cans, you could draw from your existing tank.

But what about cooling in the summer...is there a combo unit for heating & cooling? (Or are heaters & ACs covered under their own thread?)
