I've got 3 years of OTR and a spotless record, but I've been out of a truck since 2009 (CDL still valid). Should I go with a mega carrier and put in a year or try to get a job on the dock?
I wish companies would give drivers a pass for leaving the industry during the recession.

Tough one. I would still apply and see where it goes. They might say "no" or they might just give you a shot to see how you do with a test drive. I would look into taking a refresher course with an accredited CDL school. Good luck.

won't hurt to apply to all the local job. all they can say is no. good luck in your job search

Ya I looked for LTL local for a month and all wanted about 1 year experience w/ in a year atleast or so... so I might do a refresher course and go flatbed regional for a year, but I just got approved for fafsa so my schooling for EMT would be paid if I keep good grades then I might go to the fire academy to be a fireman lol. Decisions Decisions. Just got my Hazmat endorsements also lol.

Looking into paid refresher companies now (Averitt, Roehl, etc). I was hoping they brought guys off the dock so I could start building seniority now.
Thanks for the replys!mje Thanks this. -
Averitt wants you to put in time w/ that company before you can do local combo driving. Recrutier says you need to do 1 year OTR, Dedicated, or Regional before you step foot in the local department.

When you say Mega carrier, i assume you mean OTR outfits like Schneider , Swift etc and the other of those outfits that only require a Pulse to get hired. If so then do what they do with every driver that comes thru the front door : Use them for your own needs like they do just to get a body in a parked truck. Get a full yeras all weather experience, then dump them and get a real job doing LTL or Local work and get home to your family every day. If you can find an out fit that will put you on the dock that gives you an inside advantage to get a driver position with them then all the better. -
For me it's not about being home everynight, it's about getting fair pay for the hard work. Hopefully LTL will get me that someday.
mje Thanks this. -
If it was me, Dave, I'd be hitting ALL of the local trucking companies. In person. Then, if nothing works out, you might need to go the mega bottom feeder route. But at least get out there and give it a try first.
I would just bypass online apps, and if you have researched a company on line, and it doesn't look like you would qualify, I'd ignore the online stuff, and visit them anyhow.
IN PERSON, not on the phone. It is so much easier for some clerk to tell you that you couldn't possibly qualify over the phone. But show up in person, and ask to speak with someone from HR.
Good luck!mje, Jrdude5, jakebrake12 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I usually see eye to eye with you Don, but I would have to respectfully disagree. I would start with online apps (IF you know how to build yourself up in a resume). THEN go in person if there is no response. Just my opinion. I got my job online... it worked for me... but different regions at different carriers have different ways of working things. I may be right, or I may be just waaaay off. Usually companies don't like people knocking on their doors unless they are trying to fill spots.jakebrake12, DaveBrown, Big Don and 2 others Thank this.
