hi all ive got a question I have been solo otr since October and im doing pretty well but I still have alot to learn and ive got a question about sliding tandems from inside your cab I have personally seen some reefer driver able to slide their tandems without ever getting out of their truck I mean ive seen guys open their doors at guard shack drive to the door back it in then without ever getting out they slide their tandems to the rear back the truck up then when they are done they pull forward slide them forward then get out and close the doors if it is a trick you could do id love to know how and I know they must do it.from inside the.cab because everytime they go to slide them I hear a poof of air so I know its not they pull the air release and these trailers dont have the release bars they have air release so if anyone could shed some light on the subject it would be.much appreciated ive googled it and cant find anything about it

Some trailers have an air release for the tandems, so they don't have to get out to release them.
-
Never seen one where you didn't get out to pull the button.
My reefer has an air slide. I have to pull my red button out then go back and pull the button to release the pins so i can slide it. When I push the red button back in it pushes the pins back into place automatically. Just gotta make sure to keep it well greased, and it works beautifully.
Maybe that driver had it setup so when he dynamites the trailer it also pulls the pins ... but that wouldn't serve very well if he sets the brakes at night. Might move one hole and weight will now be off. It is possible, I guess.diesel drinker Thanks this. -
it has a third button or switch on the dash not the trailer brakes
just like a switch to dump your tandems or release your 5th wheel
just common sense -
My does I put electric solenoid on trailer got rid of the air pull valve and ran wires in to cab also did my air dump for trailer in cab have put 2 right way weight gauges in cab. Slide tandems without having to get out of truck all the time and makes it real easy getting weight right when not getting in and out all the time. Now if I could figure easy way to open reefer doors.
Farmerbob1, Zangief, dgc and 2 others Thank this. -
I don't think you would have a way to release the pins in the cab, that could be a disaster looking for a place to happen, and the air assisted is always supposed to reset the pins as soon as the supply knob is pushed in. The plumbing and/or electrical switches needed to accomplish remotely pulling the button is something I have never seen out here.
You can do what the OP said with a manual release, just pull the pins when on the property and lock them out, then you drive carefully and use the trailer brakes separate from the service brake pedal to stop the trailer while moving the tractor, even a tractor without a trolley valve could do that by pulling the red knob and setting the spring brakes on the trailer.
There are places that it is an advantage to have the manual sliders.
Since the air assist puts the pins in as soon as the spring brakes are released, that wouldn't work for the trailers wiith the air slider, and it really doesn't as we have both so that is not speculation. You can jostle the air sliders to pull stubborn pins, though, so there are advantages to both, and the air operated is safer because you can't forget to set the pins when you take off down the road.
I use a big hammer to convince stubborn pins to retract for almost any trailer and I have a pin puller I haven't used in years out in the garage. -
I've seen it and it's been around a while.
never had one in a tractor I drove though.
just another switch on dash, like "Transam Pete" said. -
i dont have one but i would think it is a double switch like a 5th wheel release
to prevent hitting it accidently -
Pins are spring loaded never have had a problem with popping in. I hooked up elec solenoid so default is when it has no power or air also put guard on switch. Cap the pressure line that comes from trailer parking brakes. With the way i have mine i feel alot more safer then the factory setup. Works great don't have to slide from dead pull anymore which is real nice in winter. And a heck of alot easier on the truck also. And when loading produce don't have to get in and out of truck all the time to slide them. makes it super easy backing into tight places can shorten or lengthen at the flip of a switch. Used just a reg switch on/off. Been wired up on my trailer for 4 years not one problem. Got any ? Just pm me its real simple to do. No dif then fifth wheel air slide or fifth wheel air kingpin release. Would never want to pull a trailer without it wired up that way again.

For company drivers: For about $50 you can buy a spring loaded puller with a hook on one end and a "C" clamp on the other end. Clamp attaches to the side rail and the hook goes on the pull rod. Pull the chain attached to the spring and slip a chain link onto a hook on the clamp. It puts enough tension on the pull rod that when you move the unit forward or back a hair the pins disengage. Works only on horizontal pull rods. Does not work on vertical bars.
