Not trying to get into the actual HOS rulings and what they mean... I think the rules and regs folder has this dead horse flogged to a pulp.
My question is, how will these new changes affect you guys? I am a linedriver that runs ONLY at night. With that said, we have to have two periods off (0100-0500) at the exact time when the bulk of our shifts occur. Long story short for us, we can only run five nights a week now. We have drivers that run a 6 day/week bid, but also get adequate time off afterwards. These bid drivers now have to get everything changed around and it is causing a huge headache for our travel agents (dispatchers) that have to reshuffle all the decks. I have a friend who runs for Old Dominion, and he said they are hiring part time drivers just to make up the difference on the days their usual drivers can't run anymore.
I've decided to make the best of things and capitalize on this stupid ruling and join the national guard as a vehicle operator (88M/2T1 MOS/AFSC). If I cant run more than five days a week, I might as well do the whole "one weekend a month" deal and give back to the state in public service.
My question is, how is your carrier dealing with this? How will the new HOS rules affect you directly? But also... with all the money that freight/LTL carriers make, how the hell are they not fighting this? My carrier seems like they just shrugged their shoulders and said: oh well, we will just deal with it.
New hours of services... how will it affect you? (LTL drivers)

I reset at home every week. I usually get home Friday or Saturday. With the current rules if I get in late for some reason I'll usually have a shorter week the next week. So I might start my reset Saturday one week and Friday the next. I never do more than one a week but sometimes they start less than 168 hours after the previous one started. So the new rules will basically move prevent me from being home weekends a lot of times. My reset will keep progressing to later in the week since I won't be able to do a short week to get back on track.
Looks good on paper in a perfect world.
I'd love to tell one of the pushers who came up with this silly idea that since they went into the office on Saturday for a few hours that their weekend will now be Sunday/Monday until such time as they go in on Sunday and it moves to Monday/Tuesday.25(2)+2, road_runner, crb and 2 others Thank this. -
Didn't realize this was the LTL forum. I imagine you guys have more consistent schedules.

Pretty soon all drivers will be limited to driving 8 hours per day five days a week. There will still be the same results for truck accidents while 4 wheeler car accidents increase without any new rules for them. The real reason for these rules is because the big trucking companies who have monopolized contracts do not want any new competition to be able to take their business. Those corporations started out when there were lax rules and made millions of dollars so now they can prevent others from making money.

What r the new rules?

FYI... It's not the trucking companies that want you to only work eight hours a day five days a week it's these clowns at P.A.T.T. run by Joan Claybrook. Will stop at nothing until the trucks run eight hours a day 40 hours a week.
She thinks by the running trucks on the schedule that it will pretty much eliminate truck accidentspeterd Thanks this. -
it would defenitly eleminate truck accidents.
it would also raise prices across the board.
truckers are paid by the mile. not by the hour. cut there hours in half. you cut there wages in half. which are already lousy. -
The one reset a week messes us up more. From my understanding I will only reset every other week. The 6th day is over pretty much. Basically I will run off my recap. The 30 min break within 8 hrs is going to STINK! Just where are we going to park? The new rules are going to cut many ltl linehaul driver's pay. The new rules will require more ltl drivers, but they will make less in my estimation.
road_runner Thanks this. -
You really believe this? Especially since it would require more drivers to accomplish the same tawk. Just how would it ELIMINATE truck accidents? 8 hr shifts will prevent drivers from backing into objects, being hit my 4 wheelers, and having weather related accidents?
