Im not sure if you are understanding what I am saying. Forget company policy or legal u turns. The U turn this driver made was Illegal!! He clearly started the turn from a lane of travel that was not a turn lane. Not even legal for a 4 wheeler to make a turn from a travel lane. USA truck driver is responsible for this collision despite what the bus driver did or how unsafe the bus was to drive. Look at the picture of the collision to see what I am saying.

Maybe so. So it is still an illegal move. Truck driver was in the wrong.

So according to your logic trucks could never make a right or left turn in tight situations because they use more than one lane? You don't sound like a truck driver with that logic. Didn't you not ever wonder what those signs on the back of the truck meant? "Caution truck makes wide turns" . Even a standard right turn takes 4 lanes. The trucks are allowed to use whatever number of lanes are required to safely make these turns. If the bus had not been speeding it probably would have easily been able to stop even with the faulty brakes and bad tires.sherlock510 and MUSTANGGT Thank this.

He has a point. Same thing, basically if you were making a tight right turn.
You would use the middle lane so no street light or stops signs were knocked over.
If someone is going too fast or doesn't realize you're turnin until its too late, well that's on them.MUSTANGGT Thanks this. -
The biggest question that seems to be overlooked here, is "How did the bus miss seeing a large white object?"

Ask Ray LaHood. I'm sure with his distracted driver campaign he will have some type of answer.

Truck driver makes right turn and has to button hook it. Car coming in the right lane gets in the space cushion the driver tried to leave himself. Car gets crunched by the trailer. Whos fault is it? The truck drivers by default. If I had a diagram to draw out what obviously happened in this incident I would but this is not a case where the USA driver started his turn in the proper lane and hooked it. And yes it is illegal for any vehicle to start a turn of any sort from the improper lane. If this truck could not have made the turn from the provided turning lane he is supposed to keep going until he or she finds a place to legally and safely make the turn.
-
The bus driver will and is being charged for things they are at fault for but the USA driver if you just look at the picture made an illegal U turn in this case. When I look at the picture the driver could have pulled further forward and then started the turn from the left turn lane.

If have looked at the videos and pictures, but maybe I've missed it, but nowhere did I see a no u_turn sign. So I'm not sure why I keep hearing illegal u-turn. Would I have made that turn? I don't know without seeing the area in person, but if the case presented itself and conditions were right, then I would have done the same thing. The problem is we don't know what is further down the road. Might be a better place to turn, or there might be a low clearance. I would not take that chance and make the turn at the first safe place I see. Sure beats having to back up a mile with traffic coming at you.
BTW, it is appearant the driver did not fully think about what he was doing. There is no way that trailer was going to clear the median without going over something. The turn should have been started another 50-60 ft down the road allowing more room for the trailer to swing. But then again I wasn't there.MUSTANGGT Thanks this.
