I could have shut down and taken a 34 restart at noon today since my appointment isn't until Monday morning. Then I figured with the new rule where we have to have two consecutive 1 AM - 5 AM in our restart, that means I would have been sitting for over 34 hours and may not have enough time to make it to my destination after the break. So I kept driving until 10PM just so I can take a 34 hour break. It actually prevented me from resting at my current spot and forced me to keep driving so that I wouldn't sit for over 34 hours and miss my appointment. The government always has the opposite effect of their intentions.
The new restart rule actually caused me to drive more instead of its intention

You are not forced to take a 34 restart. Your 8th day falls off your 70.
So you could have spent any part of the weekend wherever you want.rocknroll81, Blind Driver and RickG Thank this. -
With my elogs, when I have a full 11,14, it actually only shows 8 and as soon as you start your 14 hour clock that thing goes to 7:59 and starts ticking down. Before at least there was the illusion of 'time paused' but now feel like I'm burning daylight. Company says don't take a 30 minute break til at least 5 hours have gone by on duty/ or driving. OK doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of the 30 minute rest? So now when I pull over to grab a coffee and walk the dog for 12 minutes I guess I will have to just falsify my logs on duty for that.

My elogs do the same. Perhaps all Qualcomms and Peoplenets came up with the same system of doing this. The funny thing is that 30 minute break flies by! I know I could take more off time if I want, but man it doesn't even feel like I took a break since it is over in about two minutes heh.

Just remember if you take the 30min break too soon, you may have to take another 30 min break before your 14 is over with. I thought I read somewhere that 6 hrs was a good figure to go with, 6 hrs plus 1/2 hr break would leave you only 7 1/2 hrs on the last part.

if your worried about your 11 hours of driving take your 30 min after 3 hours
if you typically use your full 14 take it after 6 hours
of course if you are using your 14 there should be more then one 30 min break in there already
or at least would be for me -
I took my 30min break at 2 shippers today to keep rolling....just ask to be released and do your 30min while waiting to be loaded or unloaded then no need to burn more time later, I did 2 today like this to make sure I made my final a hour ago.
