Everybody has probably seen someone with a bike mounted on the back of their tractor. Would a mega allow this on one of their rigs?

They won't let you drill holes or do modifications for a rack. Then you have to consider what type truck/sleeper you have. Some of them lighter ones have the fifth wheel as far forward as possible. Make a turn and the trailer nose might take it out. Many drivers drive condo's today. You can always get a folding bike and keep it on the top bunk. My last truck had a big sleeper and I had plenty of room on the back of the truck. Not all are tight but you have to make sure it was secure. It's not a normal question that pops up so you should ask your dispatcher.

If it is tight, you could loosen and turn the handlebars to keep it more slim. Then it should not be a problem. I see more than a few trucks with bikes out back.

Dispatch or a company representative will almost always side with their insurance company. Some things are best not asked as long as you know what you are doing. Proper clearance and proper securement. (is that a word, spell check does not like it)

What about a folding bicycle? If it folds small enough, it could ride in your sleeper.

I had mine on the back of the truck for over a year. There are some paint scratches, but I'm not too worried about it as when the APU gets installed, they will be cutting a hole in the sleeper where the main scratches are anyway.

I would go with a folding bike.
    My sister uses one everyday.
They have improved the quality a lot.
And you would never have to worry about it being stolen.:biggrin_255:

ask your mega carrier...many dont want the image of their truck tarnished with a bike strapped on the back.

I used to haul one around in a tractor, back when there was a hell of lot less room inside. I'd take the front wheel off, and put it in the sleeper.
I've also used a normal rack, designed for a hatchback type car on the back of the cab, but the bike got very filthy.

If I wasn't so lazy now I'd throw one in the unused upper bunk.

You also have to remember that the vibration and shock in the truck is much more severe than a car, and keep checking your tie down of the bike, the integrity of the rack, and watch for loosening nuts and bolts on the bike and rack.

I was in an operation for a few years where I kept the same trailer, and could usually put the bike in the trailer.
Wouldn't work in the typical 'drop and hook' crap we deal with now.

Even in an air-ride trailer, I'd sometimes find bike parts on the floor of the trailer after a long trip.

We here at the Mega DO NOT WANT you to have a life, while on the road. You are to be in your sleeper or attached to the truck at all times.!!!!!..You are under our command while on the road.

We will get free security out of you by gaurding our loads and our truck. You are NOT to leave anywhere at all.You will not be able to drop your trailer and bobtail. This is against company policy. You only have the right to drive the truck, sleep in the truck and be beside the truck at all times..Only while showering, you are able to leave the truck but you must get back swiftly to gaurd the truck.

Keep in mind drivers. You are property of us while working, driving, under dispatch and even while off duty at your HOME 20...Welcome to the new world order. Now please get you new number and fall in line...
