I drive with it on all the time unless I'm in city limits or neighborhoods in the mornings or evenings/nights where I turn it off if I don't really need it just to be nice. Most of the trucks I drive it doesn't interfere with the shifting but on one it comes on if there is any slack on the throttle so in that truck I drive with it off so it doesn't mess up my gear changes. I don't know what jake-shifting is.
Oh, on slick roads I leave the thing off.
jake brakes; when to use them, when not to

When coming down grades like the Grapevine,I pick a gear that the truck likes and holds speed w/out using any brake, only the jake, and yes I have used it in December in BC, Yukon Territory and Alaska

I use a jake brake when I have a heavy load in city if driving and a light turns yellow and I need to stop quickly. Try to avoid it most of the time tho
On the highway if I see traffic stop immediately...
Also down hills with a load.....
Other than that no jake for meLast edited: Jul 23, 2017
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
I have cat acert,. most of engine you can set delay usually they come on as u took off the foot from accelerator but cat ET can change parameter to 2 sec pause or more but that was too much pause so i set at 1 sec pause and had any issues , mine are always ON and i use spike trailer brakes as well rarely use foot brakes only for complete stop

You can add 1 sec delay pause in ecm settings , it will not hurt or cost

What is 6% mean I understand the 6 part as in a 6% downgrade but not the rest of it

Allow me is still with us, you are replying to his statement from 2010.
I'll take a shot at this. When you have established a balance with the jacobs brake against any mountain downgrade, and I mean any. You will be able to get to the bottom without touching your brakes keeping them stone cold against the need to use them which will mean that you are in trouble.
First learn how to run a hill without jakes. Then run em with. If everyone passes you trash talking you? Let em by. You worry about your own self going down. -
I drive an auto Volvo. If bobtail or empty I leave em off. When loaded I generally drive with em on auto at cruise +2mph.

If that's what floats your boat who am I to criticise.

Some kind of formatting error from when the forum was transferred over to improved servers over the years. It just means 6%.
