I'm a driver with 16 years behind the wheel...vans, reefer, some flatbed but no tanker experience (do have the endorsements also a passport for what that might be worth/no TWIC ). Looking to make more than I am now (appx 52k per year) & I understand that's possible pulling a tanker. Have a good safety/performance record and am a "get-it-done...anywhere the load has to go" type driver. What I'd like to ask current tanker drivers is who do you drive for and what you like about them. Also what DON'T you like? I know no job is perfect, but that aside if I were to have the ideal set up it's: more money obviously (by at least 10K per year), good benefit package for family & me, a livable schedule (for me) of 11 on/3 off or 17/4, willing to train (gotta learn the job right?), equipment that earns the company & me money instead of living in the shop, as little East Coat as possible...though as I said anything/anywhere. Well as I said, that's the IDEAL...actual mileage may vary. Also what's your opinion of pneumatic/dry vs liquid bulk? I don't job hop (currently 9.5 years where I am) so I tend to ask questions/do a lot of research...maybe to the point of over thinking it before I make a change. I want this to be my last job before I hang it up for good 15 years or so from now (I'm 51); so I want to make SURE. Thanks in advance for the thoughts & drive safe out there.
Thinking of making the move to tankers.

I haul HazMat waste. There's great money in that. I never get paid mileage. It's percentage pay plus Stand By after 2 hours, and there's always Stand By while the sample is being screened and I wait 3-8 hours to unload. Since incinerators are usually long distances away, I'm gone Monday through Friday. It happens to work out for me where I'm home on weekends. Except for this weekend since I pre loaded Friday to unload Monday. Usual lengths are about 700 miles one way from California to Utah. With the occasional 1400 mile trip to Texas. As of last Friday, I'm at $64k. I'm on track to hit mid to high $80's
What I don't like is since we're sub haulers for a national Hazardous Waste company, we're at their mercy and I get cancelled every so often. When that happens I hook up to an end dump and play with hazmat dirt for a bit. What I like about it is that they load me, they unload me and the do my wash out. Never have a back haul since commodities don't do well in stinky tanks. So I get paid flat percentage to haul it, and return empty as far as 1400 miles sometimes.Reverend Falstaff and fr8te_sh8ker Thank this. -
I did the tanker/hazmat 48 states & Canada, both dry bulk and liquid. Made between $60K - $65K per year. Some of the drivers made much more than me, because I took a month off each year to vacation in the Orient. Not familiar with companies in your area; check Careerbuilder and Indeed websites for that. Bulkmatic is a good dry bulk company to check. For me, I didn't really care if the load was liquid or dry bulk.
Check Clean Harbors and Bulkmatic websites.Reverend Falstaff Thanks this. -
Just food for thought....I pull dry bulk locally. Last year I grossed 58k and was home daily and off most weekends. This year will probably hit 62k. Ive also ran dry bulk otr, money wasn't as good. I know there's companies that pay a little better than what I make though....

How about fuel? I'm on track to make 65-70k this year. One of our drivers made 105k last year but that's bc he uses ALL of his allowed hours. Home every night though...

Add: Great insurance package for the industry. Vacation package is nice. 2 weeks, but jumps to 3 weeks at 8 years, and 4 weeks at 15 years. On your anniversery date you are paid average weeks salary x weeks vacation. So nice chunk of change. local drivers are home most week nights and every weekend. Regional drivers are home some week nights and every weekend, system drivers go out 10-14 days max unless they prefer to be longer.Reverend Falstaff Thanks this. -
I've been thinking hard about A&R since I live in Morris. Was following the posts on here about them, including yours. Understand they've been a little up & down last few years? How is it now? Are all their trucks flat roof? Not a HUGE deal, just @ 6'4" got used to standing up to get dressed...lol. Flatbedding was way back in the mists for me, but can't say I'm afraid to work hard.

They were down for a few year (as down as the best in the business could be) but the new management is a breath of fresh air and on par with the great management teams before the last group. Not all trucks are flat tops. The company had an issue earlier this year after it lost a number of drivers to elogs or not wanting to go on them but overall their numbers are equal to last year and they hitorically have very little turnover. I know Morris could use 8-10 drivers right now with all the new business and added rail car spots being put in that I saw when there.

Well whattaya know. I am a new member and too dumb to figure out how to enter a "thanks." Guess I will resort to just saying "Thank you" to FueltankHank for the info.

Yeah this newfangled computin' technology stumps me too sometimes. If you haven't figured it out yet, underneath the post you're reading is the word "thanks". Click it and your gratitude will be expressed.. Happy trails.
