This was posted on Landstar yesterday:

    Origin: MUKWONAGO, WISCONSIN
    Destination: COFFEEN, ILLINOIS
    Pickup Date: 05/26/2013
    Carrier Pay: $ 1,600.00
    Miles: 312
    Rate Per Mile: $ 5.13
    Weight: 5000 lbs
    Size: L 12'0" W 4'0" H 4'0"

...Not bad for a nice short run - and I have never really found any major discrepancy with LS miles.
I'm not sticking up for them by any means, but so far, any dealings I have had
    with them have been positive.
They pay on time and that's #1 for me.

I agree with this assessment. I have only dealt with 2 jerks as far as landstar agents go and that is out of the gazillion agents landstar has. Landstar pays better than any other broker and maybe that is because they have the most broker freight. Now that isn't to say they are paying what they should pay, but it is better than the rest. I take about 30 percent of my freight from landstar for the few trucks I dispatch. I was thinking of leasing a truck on to landstar until I read this forum post. There is only one thing I do not like about landstar (or two similar things). They double broker on the minute. I call loads all the time they have taken from other brokers and they want to make $400 plus on that load that they just found on the load board. One time I was taking a load with one company but they didn't factor and couldn't pay cod. So landstar got the load. I could afford a $200 loss of the load meaning landstar could make $200, but they would not go up and when I told them I knew what it was paying, I was told that landstar policy said they had to make a certain amt which was like $400 to broker the load. I just don't like the double brokering thing since we are not allowed to do it...why are they??? And the other thing is that if you call and they think you are a bco they give you a rate that is $1.5 per mile more in pay or there abouts. That is just painful to the ears to hear a load is paying $3000 and then they say oh $1800 or something like that.

    Dinos:
I agree that is not a good paying light load. Light is 5,000 lbs, not 30. Some trucks cannot even haul more than 30. Any broker who calls anything more than half a truckload weight light is a lying idiot punk. Sorry but that gets under my skin. And I get $2 per mile with my deadhead which is usually couple hundred miles out of Houston on my 53 step all day long (and steps are harder to load out of tx than flats because I have both). I just hate that his poor lil ignorant soul either believed that was good paying or just has no soul to lie to you.

It is interesting that you mention this at this time...........you know back in the 1700's-1800's when the concept of corporations was being discussed once they were approved to operate all corporations were a time limited entity, I wanna say it was for 10 years. After that by law the corporation was forced to liquidate. The founders and early governors of the country were very concerned about corporations becoming so large and powerful that the would literally take over the country including the government......and so now look where we are today once the bastardixation of our founders America got going.

Landstar now a bad company? Have they ever been a good company? If one thought that they were good, why was it that when I was in a truck stop back in NC a landstar driver panhandled me for money so he could eat. Now there is a handful of people that do fairly well with landstar. But most don't.. Like 99% don't. But if you think your doing well with them ok. But you can tell that to the judge in Bankrupcy court.

My impression of Landstar has changed over the years. They used to be all about the BCO but now that they can move freight through their brokerage side. Landstar has simply become a CH Robinson and although their are some success stories at Landstar they are becoming much more a minority then the majority. If you look at Landstar's load board you WILL see more brokered freight then Direct customer freight. Sometimes by a large margin. Landstar now has agents who do very little to garner good freight with reliable customers. As I said, their are those who say Landstar is still a success for the owner operator. But take a look at the age of truck pulling a Landstar trailer. I remember when they were shinny and new trucks. Now there is far more old, dull and faded ones. Only one reason that is. 65% of gross revenue to the BCO on lousy paying freight.
