So I have been in the State of Iowa for One month and two days now and i have to be honest with everybody here dispite what some of you may think about this company.
I arrived in Waterloo, IA on September, 22nd and started CDL school on the 23rd the first two days were spent in the class room studying the General Knowledge, Combination, and Airbrake study guides. The only study guide I had a problem with was the Airbrakes but the others was a piece of cake to me that is. Some of the others that were in my classroom were having trouble with all of it and just couldnt grasp the concept of everything on the truck and what it all does.
Wednesday the 25th rolls around we all went to the DMV to take our tests to get our permits. I passed the General Knowledge and Combination but failed the Airbrakes test. Like i said i was having trouble with that one so i had to study more that night so i can retake the test the day after. I got my permit and was ready to go out on the range to learn how to drive these trucks and was pretty excited to do it. Thursday we finally got in the bobtails and drove around the course i did better then I thought I was going to do so my confidence was getting higher and higher. The instructer took my out on the road and corrected me on a few things but all in all i did good. The others in my class however were having a heck of a time double clutching and knowing when to shift down it was horrible so im glad i wasn one of them. I practiced, practiced, practiced on the skills course and driving in the two weeks I was there then I did on the Pre-trip Inspection. Test days comes and the first test I took was the Pre-Trip Inspection and I freakin' fail it so I spent all that day going over the test and pass it the next day so I can move on to the skills course which i passed with 0 points and driving with 0 points. I was the happiest i´ve been that those two weeks.
I´m now in Cedar Rapids passed all my tests here for the company: UPS, HazMat, Logbook, and Road Test. I got my company ID and Comdata Card and I am so pleased with everything here I am currently awaiting to leave tomorrow morning for California and I couldn´t be happier right now. I hope everybody that is planning on going to CRST in the future i advise this you, Please do not let others pound it in your head that this is not a bad company to start out with. You have to experiance it yourself and then make your own opinions about it. I was worried about coming here and getting screwed over and so far I haven had a problem other then getting in contact with your fleet manager is a pain in the ##### but im sure thats with every company.
Good luck to you all!

This company runs a much tighter ship in their home state of Iowa than they do in the other terminals and training sites. And despite your positive experience, it's still well documented that CRST is the LOWEST PAYING of all the low paying OTR mega carriers...
Big Duker Thanks this. -
I was curious if you went to Hawkeye Community College for your CDL school? Sounds like you did, as they are the only program in Waterloo.
I graduated from their program in 2010 and I really liked the program and the instructors.jlharder Thanks this. -
When I went to school in cedar rapid it was a week. They went with a new school now though. The schooling sucked then. You will get tired of the way it's ran. The pay is low and do lots of sitting on the weekends. Good luck.

Great. Now you can come racing with me at 65 mph until I back off so I can get boxed in behind you on the next grade.
Welcome to the industry. Good luck, be safe, and focus on being a courteous, safe driver for 12 months - so you can advance your career.jlharder Thanks this. -
I just got my CDL through Hawkeye as well to work for CRST. I just received my Comdata & Employee ID# & I'm waiting on a trainer now. I'm really pleased with the program & the instructors & I stand by this - This is program is what YOU make of it. Congrats!

I seen a bunch of guys standing out the building of CRST in OKC today as thought they are reporting to hit the streets. They had their stuff packed and sitting next to them waiting for someone to come out to tell them where to go. I was surprised by the number of guys waiting.

Congrats from a 30 year CRST driver, keep up the good work
jlharder and Skydivedavec Thank this. -
I know a few of those guys. CRST does seem to have a shortage of trainers. I had to wait 5 days without pay for mine. But now that I'm on the roadie was worth the wait.Skydivedavec and Chinatown Thank this.
