Curious as to opinions on what is a good company driving school. I live in upstate NY and am in a vocational CDL school currently. I have a class A permit and have been trying to drive in my current school. My dilemma is the driving. In class training has been done for nearly a month and ive only driven 3 times since. So I have been looking into company schools, Swift, Prime, etc. Im not to keen on OTR but view it as gaining the necessary experience needed to get a local driving job. So with that said Im only looking to do whats necessary in OTR to gain the experience that many local companies require.
I would like some feed back with pros and cons of company schooling that any one has to offer. How long are the schools, pay, etc.
Thank you in advance for your replies

Would you have a penalty to pay if you leave school now? That does seem odd they won't let you drive.Learning this carreer is a lot more then just classroom Have you talked to the schools director about this?Considering how much of this school you have already had,you may have to pay half or the full course.A company sponsored school will require you to sign a yr contract. Are you willing to stay with one company for a yr?If you do jump ship early, you'll have to pay so much to the company for your schooling and they don't screw around, you don't pay then you're credit will be screwedThe pro is getting the exp the con is a company owning you for a yr.Thats how long it'll take before local companies will hire you anyway, here every local company requires a yr otr exp.

How long is your program? If it's over 3 mos then you may get all drive time starting soon. I agree that it seems like BS seeing as how you learn more behind the wheel the out of a book.

Have you asked them if you are going to drive more or can drive more?

The problem with this is its a vocational school. They offer programs to high school students and adults. They teach everything from nursing to truck driving. They only have one truck to teach the students on and although my class only had 7 the previous had 17. So they try to cram everyones training on one truck.
As far as me losing any money I wouldnt. I had been laid off from my previous job and was able to get a grant from the state to pay for the class. The instructor and class was good, just one truck for so many students isnt cutting it.
I also understand that going to a company school will require me to contract with them for at least a year. Im ok with that and invite the experience id gain.
I just need some direction on what company would be the best.

That's a big question. Have a wee search through the list of forums and you'll find the ones offering training.
    Some are worse than others.
What local job are you aiming for when you have experience?

It may be an idea to angle for training in that sector, I.e. flatbed or reefer . . .

Ive checked out many of the forums here and they have been very helpful.
Some of the local companies around me are Con Way, FedEx and UPS. Thats the direction id like to head in. I know that Con Way and FedEx have apprenticeship programs and have applied to them. But in the mean time I need to at least gain some experience while I wait to hopefully be hired.

Just an update. I spoke with a Prime recruiter today. All of course sounded good. She said I could do NE regional and start at .47 p/m. In an eco 49 truck. Now I know they arent condos but is that the model of a particular manufacturer or just a class of trucks? What eco 49's are in their fleet? Also she said I needed my cdl A license and not just a permit which I have. Thats contrary to everything ive read so far. Is that because I would be going to the terminal in PA for training? Not really a big issue but it will just put things of a little bit further.
