I am needing some thoughts about my recent experience with a DOT physical. I am 51 yeas old and yes I am overweight. I went to get a physical and thought I was well prepared. I am diabetic but I had my recent passable AIC reading. I have Atrial Fibrillation and had a letter from my cardiologist with included the results of the echocardiogram I was required to have to pass last years phycical. It stated that my Pulmonary Hypertension level was 51 and the limit was 50. This was not mentioned last year but this year it was. I was told I needed to get another echocardiogram and A HEART CATH! I consulted my doctor and after he had a discusion with the doctor conductiong the physical it was decided that I could have the echo and an arterial blood draw ( which hurt like hell!) to check my blood gases. The pulmonary hypertention number was much inproved at 23 but the blood gas needed to be 65 and it was 63. I had been diagnosied with bronchitis earlier this month and was told by my doctor that could have very well effected the result. Even though my cardiologist reviewed the results and cleared me the doctor failed me and I have now lost my job. I went to another clinic 2 days later with the same info was not asked for addition testing and passed. Unfortunately my employeer could not accept that result. I feel like a slim man would not have been put through all of this and the doctor was over zealous. I could get a repeat blood draw but like I said it hurt like hell. Anyone else had any dealing with a situation like this?

company doctor standards are going to be at the strictist for most of them. They are there to weed out anyone that may cost them lots of money in health care costs in the short and long term. Hard to accept but its all part of the bottom line, and with the way Obama care is going i look for it to only get worse.

Don't look at this a bad thing, look at this as an opportunity to get healthy. Ultimately your health is more important than making money, especially in trucking where you are least likely to exercise or eat a healthy diet. So you have a handful of options, get healthy and continue trucking, look for another line of work that might allow you to focus on living healthy, or look for another company that is less strict and put yourself back out there.

What was your A1C? Type II?

    What was you blood pressure?

That doctor should of explained why he failed you and ways to improve.

One I know of - singled out on BMI, and given a 1 year card only - company would not accept, no job. This is a driver trying to hire on.

    This is not looking good.

All that was fine Condo Cruiser. He failed me because my PO2 from the blood gas result was 63 and not 65. Honestly I was so angry I really didn't give them a change to say anything further. I had sat there 90 minutes to have them tell me that. My pulse ox was 92 which is passing. He only looked at one number and not the whole picture. I would like to think 95 percent of doctors would not have required that test at all based on my other info...AIC was 7 and BP 130/84 btw

Yeah, I hear ya. Understand the anger, especially when you're now unemployed because of it, and got a pass from another physician.

The person I was referring to also felt a slimmer driver wouldn't have copped the same scrutiny.

I fear for the next time ours comes around. I think many will find themselves in your shoes in the coming months.

    Good luck.

I feel like I will find a company to accept the card I have or pass another test. Does anyone know if all results go to the state and if a fail would override a pass??

I'm not familiar with that PO2 stuff. I just did a little reading to try and understand it. I do read the DOT Medical guidelines a lot and don't recall that. That's why I asked about them other numbers.

If this was a company doctor they are in cahoots with each other. You do what we say to make our insurance company happy and we'll send you tons of business type deal. When he disappeared he could of called your company and said hey this guy is borderline blah blah blah. They then probably replied back to the doctor and told him to fail you to save them the trouble and increased liability. It's dirty, I'm speculating, but I wouldn't put it past them to do something like that. I'm like you but 3 years later. I had my medical card pulled from me the end of 2010. Four months later I had 99% blockage so they did the right thing other than it cost me a fortune.

If numbers are borderline then maybe your primary care physician needs to up the game plan. Your A1C and blood pressure looks good. Maybe sleep apnea is messing with you. If you quit breathing at night them oxygen levels will drop. Reading on Atrial Fibrillation those two kind of go hand in hand just like sleep apnea and type II diabetes does.

Where to go from here? You can file for unemployment. You can try another trucking job and hope you pass. As of right now the medical program tied together and certified doctor thing doesn't start until next summer I believe. The self certification deadline is Jan 30, 2014.

If one doctor can downgrade you another one can upgrade you. I filed for disability and I'm now going to school to retrain for a new job I can do and not be a threat to others. I miss trucking but I don't want to kick over and take out a family with me.

The last thing a sick man needs is to lose his job and health insurance. It's screwed up but that's the way it is. Work on improving your health. Trucking and bad health go together once one gets in their 50's if one doesn't follow a strict health plan. Them skinny guys can get just as sick. At least we know it and seek medical attention. The skinny ones usually just fall over unexpectedly. :)

I'm not sure what to tell you. Give it a few days to calm down and give it some thought. Denial is your enemy.
