Well, I am excited to say that hubby and I begin the truck driving program at TN Tech on Monday! We were lucky and did not have to get on a waiting list, got right in.
We did consider the Tennessee truck driving school, which is also in Knoxville. They were very nice and have financing available for the $4000 tuition, which was nice. However, we decided on TN Tech mainly because it is less expensive.
The total fees for the trucking program at TN Tech added up to $1393.00. After receiving a grant for $667, my total cost came to $726.00! Awesome! So together, we spent $1452 for trucking school. Not bad, not bad at all!
It is a 2 month/216 hour course (36 days)
Class meets Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There are four students per class, nice small class!
Students must obtain a CDL Class A permit prior to the start date of their class. A drug tests is required before starting classes.
Hubby and I went to today to the DMV and got our CDL permits, along with Double-Triple and Tanker endorsements! It cost us $16.74 each.
There were more hoops to jump through, of course, to attend this trucking program at a community college versus attending the TN truck driving school.
1. Must apply for financial aid using the FAFSA website.
2. Must complete MMR and Varicella immunization documentation forms. (all colleges require this)
3. Obtain CDL permit
4. Provide DOT physical, provide Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), provide proof of US citizenship (birth certificate)
5. Complete application for enrollment (must provide all documentation)
TN tech's 2012 graduation rate 87%, placement rate 74%, pass rate on licensure examination 100%
I am not too worried about the placement rate because there are many trucking companies out there that will hire new grads!
I am excited!

Did you take into consideration how much longer you will be unemployed and the resulting loss of revenue when considering your options?
You said 2 months? That's 4-5 weeks of lost revenue over a 3-4 week course. Good companies pay around $600 a week while in training. That's $2400 to $3000 you lost in income. Also, your lost income is lost forever.....added tuition costs usually get reimbursed by quality carriers.
Looking at only the tuition costs is short sighted and can actually cost you money in the long run. -
I noticed you mentioned doubles/triples and tankers. I was just curious if you knew if tanker drivers were in demand in Knoxville. I ask because I'm looking into getting my cdl with same endorsement here in Abilene Tx, and trying to drive in the oil fiends for a while and pay some bills off. Then move back home to Sevier Co. but I wasn't sure what the tanker driver market is in the knoxville or east tn areas. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

TN trucking school RECRUITER???
You made the right choice JD!jungledrums Thanks this. -
I'm not sure ... I will ask the instructor on Monday -
Did I say something that wasnt true? Its not even an opinion of mine....just simple math.
Ive said this a million times on this forum when people start preaching the tech school route, the state career schools......nothing to do with tennessee truck school....I didnt go there, they werent in business when I got my CDL.
Im going based off what she said.....she is going to a 2 month long school. Based on their website, TN truck schools is 3 weeks.
So 8 weeks VS 3 before you start pulling a paycheck again.
at an average of $500-$600 a week in training, thats $2500-$3000 in lost revenue that no one will pay you back for. Added tuition costs are reimbursed.
Rather than make false accusations......tell me how I am wrong.
Unless youre a TN tech instructor trying to keep his job. -

Instead of accusing me of something that isnt true, tell me how I am wrong? Can you....or is it easier just to make false accusations?
Im not stating an opinion.......like saying one schools training is better than another, or their instructors are more professional. Those are opinions and will vary from person to person.
I made a statement based on simple math....based on your own statements. It is not open for debate, its not an opinion....its fact.
Unless you can tell me how I am wrong. -
Let's drop the bickering and let jungledrums tell us about their school experience, please.
