I just finished school with my CDL and 3 endorsements! (Tanker, Doubles/Triples/ Passenger) Albany Tech in Albany, Ga was a great school. Constant hands on training. They are serious about learning all the DOT laws and rules. Keeping our log books accurately was no joke to them. They spend a lot of time making sure the students knows every part of the tractor/trailer when it comes down to the pre-trip. We were also tested on everything we learned in the class room such as Map reading, Hours of operation, Log books, Dot regulations and for those who did not have their Ap's, Air Brakes, Combination and General knowledge.

I was able to obtain my AP in 5 days after the class started. I passed my pre-trip in just 3. After that, they put me in the rig and I started working on my backing skills. The class total was 12 (three women including myself)with a total of 5 instructors. The instructors were all patient and gave us the extra attention we needed in order to learn how to handle those rigs and trailers. I am a 42 year old mother and wife who has always been a bit of a tom-boy. I loved every minute of it. This was one of the most exiting experiences of my life.

Once I passed my backing skills, it was time to hit the road. I already knew how to drive a manual, but It was a bit of a challenge to drive a rig with 10 gears. The rigs were all Volvos late models with sleeper births. The school provided us with plenty of trucks with two students and an instructor per truck. Our goal was to get 600 miles per student. We were taught how to fuel our trucks at several truck stops. We went to several weight stations to learn the ins and outs while driving on highways.

The length of the class was 8 weeks (240 hrs). I finished with 1012 miles under my belt. The entire class obtained there CDL days before the last day of school which allowed for us to drive some more. For those that live in Georgia, I highly recommend Albany Technical College.

Congrats on obtaining your CDL! It sounds like you received solid training to start your career with. I much rather see that than someone that gets rushed through in 3 weeks. There is a lot more to trucking than just driving.

Good luck with your new career! :)
