Hey everyone, I'm in St.Louis and am trying to get into a trucking/cdl school here in the area and have hit a major speed bump! I was hired buy a local carrier and everything was going fine until I submitted my driving record, I have 1 dui and 2 refusals on my record all from 14 years ago, but my record is spotless before that and after to this day. I guess I'm looking for suggestions or options of what to do next or should I just give up on driving otr because no body will touch me with those blemishes on my record or is there still a chance for me on the road?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You should give up on driving commercially period, and here's why...........The trucking industry sucks under the best of conditions. In your situation it will take you years to get to the "best of conditions" if you ever get there at all. More than likely you will fall into the some 75% of those who enter and exit the industry within the first year. Probably not what you want to hear but that's how I see it. Put your effort in a different career.

Hahah!:biggrin_25519: Funny!...................10 years? Not necessarily, These are criminal convictions. Some companies won't hire with DUI's or refusals period. It doesn't matter how long ago it happened. Someone will hire him/her no doubt; however, I'm sure it will be one of the bottom-feeders. Unless the poster would enjoy being away from home months at a time and making around 25-30k the first couple of years I would find another career path.

I have to concur. You will most likely end up working at Covenant or some other sweatshop turdhole where you will lose your mind and quit owing money for the (now) useless CDL.

well.. i guess since the op didnt think enough of his thread to stick around and respond to comments then i can conclude he probably wasnt that serious in the first place... at first i thought he was asking about financial aid.. then i thought he said he already had a job driving...he said he was hired and everything was going fine until he submitted his driving record????

i have never submitted my driving record after i was hired... employers do that before they ever hire you..they dont have you submit it ...

    does not make sense ...

Geez Fuzzy, I'm standing on an overpass now getting ready to take a header into the next westbound interstate 44 :Tank truck:that rolls by hahaha!! Just kidding I would never even consider doing anything like that! But seriously, I'm 45 years old and have always wanted to be a trucker but haven't been in a position to hit the road until now.. I spent 25 years in the printing business and have been laid-off for quite some time now and had been the primary care giver for my mom who is now in a nursing home freeing me up take on the challenge of driving otr.

Fuzzy I do apreciate your brutaly honest advice/opinion, I know I have a big challenge ahead of me but after putting a lot of thought into it I think I'm going to press on and if that means starting with a less than favorable carrier and driving junk and making less than a desirable wage so be it! Hopefully someone Will pick me up and give me a chance so I can get on the road and prove myself, I'll pay my dues, work holidays and what ever it takes to get miles under my belt and hopefully in a few years it will pay off and I can start making a decent living on the road.

I'm still interested in hearing what you and others think and am open to suggestions, thanks and I hope to hear from more of you out there.

I'm looking for the pen with which to write the following . . .

    "Goodbye cruel world . . . "

I was going to suggest hiring an attorney to get the record wiped, but after that crystal ball gazing session, I guess you lot are right.

Tow, Sorry I had to go run an errand and was away from the computer. Let me try and explain the situation a bit clearer..

I was applying to a driving school here in St.Louis and the application process was going smoothly with the school contacting Hogan trucking here and they said that they would hire me and finance the cdl class for me and then I would pay them back through payroll deductions with me agreeing to sign a 14 month contract with them. Then after I went and got a copy of my driving record and submitted it to the school Hogan dropped me.

The "career counselor" at the driving/cdl training facility didn't think my driving issues from 14 years ago would be a problem but obviously they were wrong, so this is where I'm at now looking for a carrier to sponsor me through class so I can get on the road.
