I've been driving for 4 years, over 500,000 safe, ticket free miles.
I tell all my guys when the get into a situation like the OP was in to STOP! Take a minute and think thru your options. The OP admits to panicking and just making the uturn. I have before and say again that the uturn might have been his only/best option. It might not have been, taking 2 minutes to make a plan can save tons of headaches.
Had I been the trainer that saw him do this I would have gotten the truck and trailer number. If it looked like I would have the chance to speak with the driver in person I would have read him the riot act, then given advice on what to do in the future, and ended with "you could be fired for this but I'll give you the benifit of he doubt that you won't do it again" and sent him on his way.
I have in the past done exactly that. I saw a driver make a uturn (in an industrial park, no excuse), roll into the custumer I was at, get out wearing flip flops and talking on a HANDHELD cell phone. I talked with this driver for an hour (maybe not that long but it sure felt that long), made sure he understood the potential consequences and let him go.
If I couldn't talk to him person I would have called in had I known there was a safer response to the situationAfterShock, Lux Prometheus, 77smartin and 1 other person Thank this. -
Boy, you are a Real Brown Noser arent you..

Does SNL Give you Guys BNP's... (beown Noser points) To use in your company Store or somethin'? -
I really need to unsubscribe from this thread, cant stomach it anymore. You look up the road a ways and check your mirrors behind you. All is clear and you bang out a U turn if you have the room and all is well. If its real busy than I will seek another alternative, if not I wont even think twice about it. If any of these blow hard no gag reflex safety nuts want to pull me aside and preach to me than so be it. Depending on my mood I might even try to pretend I care, otherwise be on your way and do your job and ill do mine.
Aussie Tom, Toomanybikes, Shaggy and 2 others Thank this. -

That's a start of a very good career driving record sir...Your advice is spot-on also. Where I disagree with you is the idea that you seem to think of yourself as the company policy "policeman". Like I said in my prior post , if , you witness an UN-safe act then it's your duty to report to the proper folks. But as the OP himself stated...... " I started too get worried because i did not know where the bridge or clearance is at. So what i did was i checked all lanes turned on my hazards, and pulled a u turn. It was four lanes with a center and no traffic at all".....With this statement it would seem that the OP exercised as much "common sense" and initiated a safe maneuver (the U-turn) without incident.....now had he not did like he said , and just tried that maneuver on a busy city street , or a 2 lane road without checking his surroundings , I would agree , it should be reported. I have no idea if the company that you work for has charged you with the task of reading people the riot act and then giving them an ultimatum such as this......"you could be fired for this but I'll give you the benifit of he doubt that you won't do it again"...seems to me you think that you have more power/authority than you actually have. You might take a long look in the mirror and try and show folks some respect.....4 years and 500,000 miles gives you just enough experience to think your an experienced hand....just like a soldier that's just finished basic.....you've only just begun to see what trucking is like....That I'll straighten this hand out attitude is gonna back-fire on you sooner than later my friend. Nobody likes a brown-noser/know-it-all.....not even the employers.Gereke, Dinomite and Western flyer Thank this.

Non sequitur, your premise is false. Lack of incident ≠ "safe maneuver". By that logic all maneuvering is safe until/unless an incident occurs.
I think you've extrapolated too far. This section of the forum is titled "Experienced Truckers' Advice".AfterShock and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
Don't worry about your HireRight (DAC) record. Any company worth working for doesn't even consider pulling a HireRight report.
Derailed, MJ1657, Western flyer and 2 others Thank this. -
