The answer is NO. Your TRACTOR pintel hook is not weight rated to pull a con gearwith a trailer attached to it. Even if the trailer is empty. The pintel hook is simply to drag around a con gear. With the lighting and air lines, it allows you to legally bob-tail with only a con gear on the highway. But not with a trailer on that con gear.

And yes, people are mis-reading your post. What he wants to do, is hook the con gear via the pintel hook to the truck, then hook the trailer to the con gear.

Now that you mention it, the pintle on the truck does look kinda slim when compared to the beefy ones on the back of the trailer. Excellent answer though!

Thank you. And yes, sometimes I even question allowing them to be dragged down the highway sometimes. Even with the safety chains as required. A well neglected item, usually with lots of rust, or a bad cross bar.

Unfortunately, you will need to drag the con gear to a level staging point, fetch the trailer, and hook up legally. Or, find something to chock the tire with. Lumber? Brick, a stone lying around?

And like they say, the only stupid question is the one never asked.

problem with this scenario is that there is no turnaround place for about 30 miles each way legally. What will end up happening is someone will just grab another trailer, back it to the con and hook the empty. I just thought it would be funny as hell to see a trailer being towed by a con that his hooked to the back of a tractor. I am curious if it has ever been done before.

If you haven't driven out there yet, find something to chock the tire with. If you are already on your way, please stop at a truck stop / big box store or even look at debris on the side of the road. I'm glad that you are at least concerned with it rolling down the hill! LoL And yes, i've had to chase a runaway con gear once. Across a drop lot, maybe a 1/2 % grade. And no, I wasn't stupid enough to chase it. Once it rolled, it was too late. Got lucky, just bumped a couple empty trailers, no damage. Lesson learned.

Oh, and some con gears maintain an air supply that you can set the brakes on when they are unattached. Is that an option?

My question is hypothetical. Yes, I have chased many con gears in the past. Yes, it is embarrassing as hell. You are absolutely right. Most cons will have an auto parking brake IF you have a charged air tank. They will stay in place until the air drains out.

Quick question. How have you been here for six years and only had 45 posts?

    I don't say much! LoL

There are so many people that are quite helpful on here. I also try to keep clear of most of the petty bickering too. Just happened that people were misunderstanding your post, and I happened to be online. I look at TTR about 3 times a week, to keep up on things.

Was just a stroke of luck.

Also, only 11 posts, that's my age!

Sounds like a case of being at the right place at the right time to help this driver out.

yea I guess your right about mis-reading his post, to even think about hooking up a gear to box with a trucks pintel hook then trying to pull it is just so ridicules that I never thought of something like before..yes highly illegal
