Hello all!
My name is Adam but I go by Homer, I'm new to the trucking industry, I've been driving a cargo van long distances, albeit round trip for about five years now but only a few days a week and I wanted to shift into driving as a full time career. Although my ultimate goal is to move to a position as a local driver I understand that I've got to pay my OTR dues. That being said does anyone have any suggestions for good companies that hire new drivers? I'm looking for something that'll get me home weekends and where I can BRING HOME at least $550.00 a week, other than that I ain't too picky.
Newbie here.

Are you going into Class-A tractor-trailers?
Where is your location, city/state? Need to know hiring area you live in.
$550.00 a week is easily doable.
Hazmat/tanker you can bring home around a grand a week and it sets you up for good local work in the near future hauling chemicals or fuel. -
Yes Class-A Tractor Trailer, I'm out of Knoxville, Tn. Also plan on getting my tanker, double and Haz-Mat within a few months of getting my actual license, mainly because all the local companies I'm looking at after I get my year or so OTR require all those. I'm looking pretty hard at Boyd Bros, McElroy and Maverick, you know anything about any of those?
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Nope.I don't.But this forum does. Use the search feature, find the thread you want and post your question.Good Luck to you!!

Boyd & Maverick are good.
Since you already have some experience, maybe Burkhart Enterprises in Knoxville will consider you. They run usually within 500 miles of the terminal, so you should be home often. Check their website; interesting company.
South East Carriers is an excellent company.
Weekend home program:
Jordan Carriers
Maverick
Builders Transportation Co.
Ignore "experience required" and apply with any company you like. -
With you being in Knoxville your in a good spot for Boyd Bros. My bf drives through that area pretty often. During your training period you make $500 a wk but after that you should make a lot more if you drive right. As for home weekends, there may be some weekends you can't get home but Boyd does try.

Thanks for all the advice folks. Does anyone happen to know what kind of mileage new drivers get with McElroy? They pay good but if I'm only getting 1000-1500 miles a week it's a moot point.

Private Message RevKev, he used to work there.

I was with McElroy for six months in 2013. Left only b/c I got I tanker gig. I averaged 1950 miles a week. I stay in touch with a couple of drivers there, & they're average per week is a bit higher.
