    Hello everyone!

I just found out yesterday that my WIA grant has been approved and I'm starting CDL school tomorrow. I'll be doing the weekend classes at Roadmaster in Fontana, CA. 8 weeks, 22 hours a weekend, plus my current 40+ hours a week regular job. Yeah, I'm gonna be tired lol. That's ok though, I'm not complaining, it'll be worth it in the long run. I just have a few questions for some of you old pros out there. I'm sure these things have been addressed elsewhere but after a search I didn't find anything.

When should I start applying to company's?

My dog will be with me once I'm in my own truck, any tips to make life on the road easier for both of us?

Should APUs be a deciding factor in choosing/not choosing a company to work for?

I'm currently talking to two company's, Knight and Melton. Any thoughts on either company? Any suggestions on other company's?

Please keep comments more on the positive/helpful side. I understand every industry has its good as well as bad parts so I don't need any whiney douchebags who shouldn't be in the industry coming on here telling me how horrible it is. If its that bad, go find something else to do.

I'm sure I have more questions but they just aren't coming at the moment. I plan to update this thread as I go through school and when any developments happen.

    Thanks in advance!

40+22= 62 hours, a.k.a - an easy week in trucking.

Get used to the feeling of functioning without adequate sleep while you're in training.

Yes - I'd look REAL hard at APU/idle policy. Summer in a tin box can be miserable.

Start your company research now. This is a good place to do so.

    Good luck.

It is never too early to start looking. I agree with blairandgretchen, definitely try to find someone with an APU. Also, make sure that they have a pet policy that will allow you to bring your dog. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply blairandgretchen. Yeah, I'm sure I'll be fine as far as the next two months are concerned. The reason I'll be so tired is because my current job is in a sweatbox warehouse with no fans and no moving air and I'm in SoCals Inland Empire so its hot! I'm sure even though my weekends will be 11 hour days it'll still almost be like days off ...... almost :biggrin_25519:

    Thanks for the advice!

Pet policy is my #1 priority. If dogs aren't allowed I'm not adding the company to my list. I've contacted and had conversations with Knight and Melton so far. A friend of a friend who owns an auto transport company has promised to give me info on companies who are auto transport and train new drivers but I have yet to get that info unfortunately. I searched here but didn't find anything, maybe I didn't look in the right place?

How is it you qualify for a WIA grant when you are working a 40+ hour a week warehouse job?

Usually, with WIA they require you have a couple Pre-Hires... meaning, they want you to apply and be Pre-Hired before going to school....

I would start applying right away and get a few pre hires, and then make your decision. ..

Navajo Express has APU's and inverters installed. They have an email feature on the website so you can ask if they still have pet policy.

Submit applications the day classes start, then sort through the pre-hires and pick one.

Wia doesn't care how many hours you work, its about the income amount. One of my buddies jumped through all the hoops for a wia grant, he didn't have a single prehire, all he had was his school picked out, and the paper work handed in.

My advise as a seasoned Driver and now as a recruiter is look at the job placement your going to get from a trucking school.. Are they promising you anything? Are they gonna get you in a truck? or are you on your own? One thing to make sure is get your Accredited certification and hold on to it for your entire career.. I have had many driver apps who cant confirm their schooling...

WIA approval isn't based on whether you're working or not, its based on how much you're making and whether you're "underemployed", which I am.
