If, by the number one problem, you mean the number one problem facing hours of service compliance, then yes. Sitting in a dock for hours on end can and will destroy your ability to produce revenue AND remain compliant.

Are there any consistent patterns with same companies (like, big companies will most likely make you wait long time) or bad experience with shippers/receivers is random all over the places?

I guess I have been pretty lucky with the accounts I am on... there are only a few ti es where I ran into lengthy delays at a shippers or recievers... for tne most part I am pretty much in and out.. the start to load or unload me pretty quick...

I do remember when I was witn the smaller company I ran into lengthy delays... once in Alabama was backed up waiting four nearly 7 hours... that was tne worst I have experienced... with that company tnere were a few places that we picked up or delivered to that did seem to take longer...

But, now I am with a mega and on a dedicated and they get to me quick... and if not, my dispatcher usually calls to see what the hold up is and get things moving...

I experienced most of my time waiting when I pulled a van trailer. I sold them all in 2007, and I haven't experienced too much pulling a stepdeck. Typically my delays now are not a product of incompetence or indifference like they were pulling a van going to grocery warehouses. I get paid to be delayed now, averaging about $75 an hour.

In the past, I hauled regionally in the Northeast, hauling groceries out of the Harrisburg PA. I would go to a company in Carteret, NJ that had 10pm appointments for more trucks than they had available doors for, so you would need to be in line on the street by 7-8pm, otherwise you wouldn't get a door until 1230am at the earliest. Most of the time with my loads, I'd be out of there by 2am, although sometimes it was later. If you had a midnight appointment, you were almost guaranteed to see the sun come up. This was an everyday thing at White Rose.

Does this ever ever get factored this into the profitability of a route? What about for smaller fleets or OO's who don't have the power of a mega?

How do you factor in pay for these hours? Does it get rolled into the overall route?

I would answer the OP question with a definite YES.

And the lumper scam at grocery warehouses is probably just as bad for the trucking industry and US economy overall, as much of a problem as ELOGs and HOS rules.

Lumpers spike the prices of our food before they even get off the truck.

Hello to all professional drivers. As a driver (who delivers 99% frozen food cross the country) this was the huge issue from the start and still it is up to date and getting worth with no signs of slowing down or even small hope of getting better. I say this not because of 2 or 3 places I delivered or picked up the load but because of so many shippers&receivers with so many problems including waiting time(which to me is not greater then other problems as long as you get paid for). Not trying to be negative or cry baby here but{ FACTS ARE THE FACTS} and this problems hitting drivers left and right almost everyday without no mercy. The principles are if you are family oriented individual with sense of humor then you do your best to treat society with the same set of mentality not treat them like CRIMINALS or worth! If I want to name the shippers&receivers who had done that to me as a (TRUCK DRIVER) and to other fellow drivers which I witnessed with my own eyes or explained the details then I should be start writing a book which will hold a minimum of 5000 pages, so lets not even go there. The question is why they treat us like a CRIMINALS???I don't dress like criminals, I don't talk like criminals and certainly I don't behave or think like criminals so WHY???? If transporting goods to the warehouses for the usage of mankind is translated as CRIME then we need new translation ASAP.My first trainer once told me think like this: I MAY NEVER SEE THIS PERSON AGAIN OR THIS PLACE AGAIN,SO JUST FORGET IT AND MOVE ON! I tried and practice this advice like XTIMES but does It resolved anything?? Yes I'm making good money yes I am my own boss yes I have decent life and NO I am not quitting because of some evil attitude out there,BUT back to the trainer advice above which maybe works for lots of folks out there(That I am glad if it does). And it did worked for me here and there sometimes,But if my child one day want to be a TRUCK DRIVER do I like for him experience what I experienced???......And if I don't then what can I do in my part to better this situation??? May god protect you all.

You know... I cant recall ever being treated like a criminal at a shippers or recievers....

One thing I do like about being on a dedicated account is that I do go to many of the same shippers and recievers so I have a good relationship with them... even laugh and joke with them...

However, we have a driver on the account that a couple of the shippers dont like.. and if they make it hard on him.. there is a dock that is a pain in the neck to get into.. and they always put him in it.. and they make him wait longer. ..

I like to listen to Road Dog on my sirusxm radio... and they were talking the other day about the long delays at shippers and receivers and how it affects drivers.. especially when it comes to HOS
