I started out at 18%. I am now at 20%, which is really 15% because they take 25% off the top for fuel before I my percentage is calcated.

 

We're going to end up leaving him wih more questions than answers.

 

I'd ask if its gross or net. Sometimes its better to get an hourly wage than percentage if the loads pay low. Just my .02.

Ask average take home each week. Average number of loads and average miles. That will give you a place to start the math. Keep in mind percentage drivers generally don't get paid dead head miles.

% is one of the biggest ripoffs in the industry, as the boss isn't going to tell you what the load paid, it's what he feels like paying you. You're almost better with mileage pay, at least then, you turn X amount of miles, you get X amount of pennies. I worked for a company that claimed I got 27% of the load. One day, the boss told me to pick up a check for the trucking charge, after I got my check the next week, I noticed I got 22% of that load. When I questioned him about it, he made up some lame excuse, and I quit shortly afterward.

 

I get 26% of each load I haul. If my deadhead miles are more than 150miles I get 20c a mile. My increases are based on my performance. And to be honest, Ive spoken with several drivers who have loaded with the same loads Ive gotten, went to the same places im heading to. Their pay was always at least $20 less, to as much as $80 less on mileage pay. Plus my tarp fees. Ive made as little as $175, to as much as $350 on a same day haul.

 

Percentage pay isn't bad with the right company. I'm paid 25% of load and never take home less than a grand. Most of the time it's around 1200 net for a 5 day work week. And that's after medical, dental, 401k contribution is taken out. I pull a tanker so I'm not sure how much flatbed pays.
