I will never fully understand why we move some of the freight the distances that we do. I just booked a load from Oregon (home) to Norfolk, VA. It's standard 40' re-bar, nothing special. Seriously? There is nowhere closer that they can get the stuff than 3000 miles away? Believe me, I'm not whining... it pays good and gets me out from home. I just don't understand how they could be getting it THAT cheap to where it will save them money to truck it all the way from the west coast to the east coast. Boggles the mind. :biggrin_25513:

I hear ya. I took 5 pallets of frozen biscuits from Atlanta, GA to Salt Lake. Great run, nice and light - but I just couldn't get my mind past the logistical factor.

If it were my my rig I'd have been scouring the area for an LTL fill up on the load to take west.

How is it possible to gather materials from all over the country...truck them to the coast...put it on ships...ship it over seas...let other countries assemble said materials...ship it all the way back to our coasts...truck it to warehouses all over the country...sort it....stage it...then truck it to stores...and it ends up being cheaper than American made products?

    We will never know.

If it's going to Norfolk and they're doing something stupid, I guarantee the Federal government is involved.

I hauled a grain leg to MS a few weeks ago that is going to be used at a wood pellet plant. They chip trees and turn them into pellets then they are going to haul the pellets in hopper trailers to be loaded on a ship and hauled to Europe to fuel a power plant. How in the world can that work out???? Oh well I guess it keeps us employed.

Or why do I move some of the equipment that I do when they have their own truck and trailer?

been trying to figure that one out myself.

rebar and steel and what not from utah to arizona or cali. when there's same company steel plants also down there. producing the same stuff.

took a load from virgina to sacramento. 3 racks. very small, very light. paid 4 per mile. parts could have been purchased from home depot or lowes and assembled right there in sacramento. i don't think it would have cost $50 to buy the parts for them 3 racks. company built and shipped to their sister company.
