I don't know if this has been posted here, I don't remember seeing it. I just took my DOT Physical, and I have type 2 diabetes. My doctor informed that under the new guidelines, that I have to keep a record of glucose test. Once when I start my trip, and every 4 hours after. Is this a fact?

Depends. Are you on insulin? If so, then you must become exempted by the FMCSA first. If you are not on insulin and pills only, then the dr. doesn't know the rules. I'm a type 2 and never had those guidelines until I applied for the exemption. Insulin dictates whether you need the exemption or not.

Go here: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/medical/driver-medical-requirements/diabetes-exemption-application and download the PDF. Print it out and take it to your Doctor regardless if you are on insulin or not. This way your Dr. will know that what they told you is wrong for non-insulin dependents.

Wow I hope not , I thought it was just an A1C check which is a 90 day average which I am sure you are familiar with.

I am a Pilot and the FAA wants Diabetics to check their blood sugar 30 minutes before landing. So picture this..... I am holding onto the stick and have both feet on the rudder pedals , pedals and the stick are in constant little movements to maintain controlled level flight.

So I can now take my left hand off the throttle , get my meter out of the bag , open the small vial the test strips come in and insert one into the meter.
Then put a lancet in my finger poking device and stick my finger until it bleeds , wipe off the blood and read the meter and make sure I am "SAFE" to land.

Some people don't have a clue , that is very dangerous to try to check your sugar while flying. Would love to take a FAA inspector up with me and let him watch me try this.... I would scare him to death.

I feel like if you have kept your Diabetes under control by an A1C test that should be enough , but I don't make the rules.

Hope this is not true !!!

I think he is confused with having to furnish glucose level log when applying for an exemption. as said if ya don't take insulin you are good to go. if meds control it without insulin, you are good to go.

Well I'm screwed, I have gone through five glucose meters in the last year and don't have a clue what my readings were three weeks ago let alone three months.

If you wonder how, I have dropped two of them and they didn't swim in the water well, two of them were smashed when something fell on them and one of them was run over by a forklift - I don't wear watches because I end up destroying them.

Honestly I think this is a case where the doc is clueless.

When i have been calling to these recruiters I specifically ask them about this. I am a type 2 that is controlled by medicine. I am told by each company that I only need to worry if I am insulin dependent and if it is controlled by medicine it is just good to get an updated A1C prior to the company physical by their own doctor.

Are they blowing smoke up my ### too?

I am sorry, I forgot to mention that I have been doing this for 40 years, I am on pills. I was just asking if this was something new this year. The way the doctor was talking like it just went in to effect. If it is not true, then next year when I see him I will tell him he is full of crap

Ridgeline , an A1C test will give a reading of what your average has been over the last 3 months.

I heard it has to be below 10 , which I think is pretty easy to do. If you are taking pills and at least trying to eat healthy a few days a week, should be no problem.

Well I get one every time I go to the docs, my doc is a real PIA when it comes down to keeping the number down, I was doing really good until my wife recovery from an injury and it may be up to 10.

IIRC, anything over an 8 requires insulin, my fluctuates between 6.1 and 6.5, I need to loose another 20 lbs before my next checkup in the spring. I take the lowest dose of metformin 1/2 tab twice a day.
