I am still not convinced you weren't trolling with that question.
If it really is a question then I will give you a reason.
A clutch is not is not flipped between two positions like a switch or a button.
It is not either in or out , it is engaged gradually and gently with as little revs and slip as possible.
This is something a simple switch/button and even some drivers can't do.Hammer166, OPUS 7 and Interplanet Janet Thank this. -
I drove a 89 Mack that had the light dimmer on the floor.
Didn't mind it at all.
Back then some Mercedes trucks has the lights , direction indicators , horn and dimmer on one stalk.
Forward bright , back dim , left and right for indicators , 3 twist positions for lights and the horn a button on the end.
You would have thought they could have worked the clutch in there somewhere. -
The occasional double clutch is about the only exercise I've been getting of late...

Actually, think about it for a second. An automatic tranny has automatic clutches. (so you don't have to push that pesky pedal down, right ?) Now think back about 4X4's where you had to stop, get out, bend down and manually turn the switch at the wheels to engage the 4X4. Now, you engage 4X4 from your dash, a simple turn of a dial ! So, I think engaging the clutch likewise is coming. The OP better patent this idea or he will be a bit irritated if it shows up next year on big trucks !
Numb Thanks this. -
Yep ,a simple trigger (like on a gun or Xbox contoller) would work fine, would still allow you to ease on/off it but also allow way more finesse -
Come to think of it I think most of the pickups still did that well into the 1980s.
I had a 1983 Ford LTD that had the dumbest thing ever, push in on the turn signal lever to honk he horn, I kid you not.
Pretty sure my first OTR truck still had the dimmer on the floor too, 1997 International 9200. -
Yeah the old body 9000 series international trucks did have it on floor.
I remember driving my dad's friend's 1991 Lincoln Town Car with that automatic headlamp dimmer. #### thing actually worked. -
I had an Automatic clutching 4 X 4 in a 1975 KW. You had to use it to start and stop tho! LOL After that, if you touched it you'd have to stop and start over. I could drive from Amarillo to OKC and only use it to engage the lo gear to get started and then I'd creep at a stop lite and when I backed up to a cattle chute had to use it.
