I'm sure this thread is destined to be an epic, 1800 degree volcanic eruption of a thread, but here goes anyways.....:biggrin_25523:

On my last load of the day today (and truth be told, more often than not, on MOST days lately...) I was headed back to the yard, in the early stages of what passes for rush hour traffic here. I was humming down the interstate, doing maybe 72-73 in a 70 mph, and was in the middle of three lanes, mostly to avoid traffic entering and exiting the highway. I notice about 1/4 mile or so ahead, there is a semi with a dry van in the same lane....Well, it quickly became apparent that he was either governed, a naturally slow driver, or was held up by traffic in front of him. Anyways, as I slowed during my approach, we went thru a series of curves, during which time I was able to determine it was either the first or second option, as there was no vehicles in front of him for at least 1,000 yards..... Well, trying very hard to avoid tailgating him, I also slightly drifted out first to his left, then a bit later to his right (after making absolutely SURE there was no traffic in either lane that I was encroaching on...) to "politely" let him know I was there, and hoping he would use (un)common courtesy and move aside for faster traffic (me) which is even indicated every so often by signage....(ie- "slower traffic stay right" etc.)

So my question is this....If/when encountering such a situation, how long do you wait for the driver to "do the right thing" (pun intended) and give way to you? I generally try to give a couple of minutes, but especially today where there was no slower traffic in the slow lane that he was intending to pass, I got fed up after maybe 2 minutes, and proceeded to slide over and make quick work of passing him (while I was still behind him, my speedo was showing him to be only doing 61-62). When I drew even with him, I glanced over and gave him a palms upward gesture (as if to ask "WTH?), which turned out to be in vain, because his attention was taken up by the smartphone in his hand and the occasional glance at the road ahead of him. Heck, he may not have even looked in his mirrors once to even know I was there!!!

So, aside from you governed drivers that can't get out of your own way (I keed, I keed....LOL), how long do YOU wait until you decide to pass one of these rolling road blocks on the right?

before the legal eagles poop on this thread and condemn you for driving 72 in a 70...........

typically, i wait about enough time to feel secure he is one of those ME ME ME drivers that doesnt care about impeding the flow of traffic

then i go around the right, and keep it moving

no faces, no fingers, nothing, just go on about my business

that time typically takes about 30 seconds from the time i am in a position to make that decision

too many times, i sit behind a rig (as you described) thinking, there is a justifiable reason for him to be straddling along the middle lane, and only to find out he is (as you described) not giving a flying fig about anyone else or the flow of traffic or even the legalities of the white sign that specifically says (slower traffic keep right)

I just pass them on the right, if we are lane restricted. I don't even glance at them as it doesn't bother me in the slightest. The right lane is a real pain in congested areas.

I agree. I don't drive aggressively, but I drive with a purpose. I'm always aware of what's around me, and if I were in the same situation, I would have done the same thing.

I just go by the name of the trucking company, been out here long enough to know which ones will stay out there forever! I just automatically take whatever lane is left to safely get around. Once in a rare moon I will key the mike and say dude people r passing on the right and the left of you does that not tell you anything ( just hopeing that big light will come on) but to my dismay never does.
