In your experience is the last week in January or first week in February a bad time to move?

I will be going from North Orange County, CA to Fort Worth, TX taking I40. I realize there has been bad weather lately through there and I don't want to get in over my head. I've driven through snow before but I was in a Jeep with 4x4.

This time I will be in my Toyota Corolla with it loaded with my belongings.

Should I wait or will I be okay as long as I stick to interstates?

EDIT: This is assuming "normal weather conditions" and not a major blizzard.

EDIT AGAIN: This will be my first multiday road trip IN THE WINTER by myself so I'm trying to be cautious and make good decisions.

If your nervous about it take I10 to I20 and go that way. Mileage is about the same anyway, maybe a little closer to the Ft Worth side of the metroplex.

It totally depends on the weather. If a cold snap is going on with nasty weather etc. I-40/I-10/I-20 can get icy which would be a problem. I've seen I-10 shut down almost from ElPaso-San Antone. I-40 around Amarillo gets nasty too, if the weather is bad. I-40 over Flagstaff, while nasty at times, at least mostly stays open, because they're better equipped to handle snow conditions.

    Thank you both!

Also, is it true that US Highways are more likely to less maintained than Interstates? I would guess it probably depends on what part of the country you are in as well?

U.S. highways are maintained by the Feds, but usually the County "contracts" with the Feds to maintain them.

If there's any doubt about 40, I'd take Kemosbi's suggestion I10 to I20 - but heed the warning on the weather for I-10 too.

Basically just watch the forecast a couple of days out, and make the call before you run.

Be careful! We've run that route for the last 7 years, twice a week.
