Something I used to do a few years ago while working for a 65mph company when needing extra driving time: Watch the clock and hit a ramp shoulder at 6 minutes after whichever quarter hour you're in. Take off at 9 minutes after. Log the time as a full 15 minutes not driving. Absolutely nothing illegal about it. Got called in to safety once after doing that about 10 or 11 times in one day. Was asked how I could turn 740 miles in 11 hours in a 65mph truck? Told them how I did it. Head of safety spent hours trying to find some way to pin something on me. He couldn't. Log book looked like I traced the outline of a comb.
rookietrucker, KeithT1967, bottomdumpin and 1 other person Thank this. -
I use DDL .... It's a computer program on which you can keep your logbook. It is not linked to the truck. So you do all the work but the advantages are:
by law you have to have prited only the previous days not the current.
As with any paper log book you can change stuff but you do it on a computer so you do not lose 20 minutes every time!
shows you when you have to stop
has rules for canada (where you can drive up to 13 hours)
sowes you how to split 8-2 in the US
I used it for 11 years and never had an accident because I was tiered!
I never go over the 70 hours rule but I move my driving hours the way I want keeping fuel time and tolls and border crossing when it happens.
I do not think I drive more than supposed to .... it is only that I drive when I feel I can drive not when I SHOULD BE DRIVING BY LAW! -
"Stories" I have heard:
When taking a 15 minute break don't come off the drive line just then but carry the time forward into your next pee pull over and make it look like 30 mintutes.
Get a little tired and see a rest area? Pull in and take an hour and half nap but log it on line 3 and continue down the road and stop where you were going to stop anyway but now you only need 8.5 hours to complete your 10.
You know the truck stop 100 miles up the road is going to be sardine full when you get there so you stop here in reality but your logs show you 100 miles up the road so you take an 8 hour break (but show 10 on the paper log) and drive and by the time you get 100 miles your logs have caught up to you.
Conversely you go 100 miles past your 11/14 but logs shows you 100 miles back behind you, so you take a 12 hour break (but only show 10) and time caught up to you again.
Edit:
Also when stuck in stop and go traffic just tally up your total miles for the day and divide by 63 or whatever number you like and make sure you log no more than that amount of time on line 3-- some ways I have *heard* to run efficiently.Last edited: Aug 26, 2015

Of course loose gives you more flexibility, i do have elogs and loose leafs and i use loose leafs but my loose leafs are pretty close to my elog.
Yes i am paid by the hours and no union for me, actually i believe we should be paid by the hours. -
You do know that using paper AND elogs is the same as running two log books, right? I almost got popped for that in Ohio, until I proved to the officer that my elog was messing up.Ougigoug Thanks this.

Exactly! The difference between e-logs and paper is that with elogs you are a robot! with paper you are still limited by mileage, and you would not drive more. Honestly! in average we drive 400 miles a day!
BUT (But means however not BUTT): If you stop after driving 500 miles saying that you have your quota on a load that is 2200 miles is different than stopping after 200 miles on a load that is 300 miles.....
Waiting time at shipper and receiver are not taking in account by government or industry. My last waiting time has been 12 hours when I did not close my eyes. Got there at noon with appointment at 6 pm hoping that I might load early. They finished at 1152 PM! DO YOU WANT TO TALK LOGBOOK? -
I agree with 4,but im thinken if the op can use paper logs they probably have preplans while driver is under a load unlike the mega elog companies.

If I would be paied by hour I would go back to being a driver tomorrow! Now not 7$ an hour!

How about running out of the 14 while getting unloaded at the first stop which is a dirt gravel lot only 7 miles away from the state of the art truck stop which has maidens on standby to scrub your back in the deluxe marble showers. With Elogs you can't just finish your 10 there and go over, it will be 2100 and no parking plus it will screw up your next 14 for your next stop. Well, with paper logs you just slide over the 7 miles and finish your 10+ as needed and no-one is the wiser.
KeithT1967 Thanks this.
