Refusing to drive

Pretty sure Prime's L/O's can have repairs done anywhere of their choosing, especially if it's tires so long as they have the money available to do so. Company drivers not the case.

I wouldn't take what night dispatch says as gospel. Do what you feel is safest.

 

and there in lies the catch, I highly doubt his maintenance account has enough funds to cover 6 new tires. So then prime loans him the money, so they have a say where it will be done.

 

Even at 57 mph prime drivers still have a hard time......

 

Are Prime L/Os not permitted to pay for their own repairs/tires with their own money instead of going through the maintenance account?

 

Those people in road assist hear all the stories mechanics and the like try to use to get drives to get new equipment or repairs. They do know what is legal to run with so if your tires are legal I'd expect some push back from them.

If you don't feel it's safe to do so then you can go that route. Just tell them you don't feel it's safe.

I think the mechanic is trying to scare you into some new tires and Prime is treating you like a company driver...

You probably want to just get new tires and be done with it and avoid more problems and another stop on a shop down the road. Why not.

Those tires are a little chewed up but still look legal to me. I would run them til I got home then change them out and put them in storage (tax write off btw) til such time as I needed one or more spare to get me a few more months down the road.

 

With a lease, the driver does not own the trucks, or even have any rights to the truck, it is owned by the leasing company, the entire time, you lease. So anything that needs to be done to the truck, prime has a say in. And I very highly doubt he has the money to purchase 6 tires at full retail, as he would not get the prime corporate discount unless it goes through prime.

 

So that means that if you choose to put on tires on your own dime you could be in breach of contract?

 

I have a friend who is doing a lease purchase with our company, we can put tires on the lease purchase trucks anytime he wants regardless of where you want to do them. Their tire discount is through Michelin and from my understanding, for Loves to come out and change a tire is $450 for 1 tire if a road side change. Not sure on a change in the shop, hes not had one changed there yet. The maintenance account pays for everything including tires. They take out a set $250 a week for this account for the length of the entire lease. If you need to take a loan to pay for repairs, they will loan it to you, but you will pay all the money back in 10 weeks. So if you borrow $10,000, youll pay it back at $1000 a week till paid in full. Once your lease is over, youll get the option of a full payout of the balance, pay X amount to pay off the truck early, or keep it in there and continue to lease on with the company.
