Thinking about making a change in my career path. Currently at a dead end in Illinois. Same ole story as lots of others. "You buy a truck and lease on here and will make sure you're successful". Well, I don't see how $1700 a week average is successful. That's not the point of this thread though. (In a way, I guess it is)

I need a change for the better. Better for me, that is. So, looking at a few companies. Mercer being one.

Does Mercer do dedicated runs at all? Part of the change I need is moving back to my roots in Ohio. Which would put me in a good place to grab loads from Ohio and run them south to KY or TN and back. Would be awesome to find something that gets me through the house nearly every day. But I won't hold my breath. I would MAYBE have to start out pulling a van until I get a few checks to throw at equipping my truck for flat bedding.

Any input you might have is greatly appreciated.

Mercer does have some dedicated runs but I honestly don't know much about those.

The Ohio valley usually has pretty good freight. But again I couldn't tell you much about dedicated freight in that area. As I'm sure your aware things are a little slow everywhere. Hasn't hit me hard yet but I know a few it has.

I would suggest calling our recruiters. They are not like normal recruiters and they are pretty honest to a fault. They could probably give you much more specific info.

    Good luck to you.

    1700 a week isn't enough for you? I'd live like a king off 1700 a week.

Guessing you don't own your truck that you have to maintain out of that pay. Plus take another 35% out for taxes and insurance. And have 2 properties you have to maintain and pay bills for. (planning to reduce that to one when I find another gig in Ohio). And let's not forget the $20,000 engine rebuild I have coming up. Yeah, 6 months of your pay right there.

Appreciate the comments! I might very well give them a shout. A friend of mine is leased on there. He's given me some info too. So, I'm leaning toward moving to Mercer. Just not fond of OTR. Don't care for being isolated all the time. lol

You won't make the kind of money you are looking for on short dedicated accounts.

I usually had pretty good luck in Ohio, whether brick from the middle, steel from the south and east side of the state and some steel over by WV. I think the north part of the state is part of the steel belt if that still exists.

I'm with LS, and though I don't know much about Mercer I can say in most scenarios of leasing on anywhere you have to go OTR for a while. You may land a dedicated gig, but I wouldn't lease on somewhere banking on it. I seen a ton of LS guys hauling those chassis up and down I69 in IN. The auto market has provided me with dedicated runs. I've been on one run round trip lately and there nice when you're on one, but they never seem to last. I just talked to a guy hauling coil around IL and OH a lot. He said there just isn't much money in it. Things have gotten scarce and competitive from van and open deck from most I've talked with.
