By looking at these numbers it looks like HOS violations are actually very common.

It's nice you're just about out of hours and cross the border,BAM!
You pick up a few.
As for log book violations they're one of the worse violations to get.
They will haunt you when switching companies.

This is one of the advantages of e-logs experience. You get to know exactly whats legal or not, because it will let you know each and every violation. When I went to paper logs at another company, I got inspected a few times without even a problem. A lot of the other guys werent really sure, they guessed a lot. Got a lot of violations because of it.
I see why people like paper logs, but they actually need to know exactly how to do them if they want to have the advantages. Its not an advantage if you cant pass inspection because you arent sure what to do.
