If you want local try getting your class B and do a potato chip route or something. Unfortunately there is about a 98% likelihood of not getting a local job with a fresh cdl class A but if ur willing to put in a good 6 months to a year w schneider they will most likely move you to a local dedicated or intermodel job if available within a 60 mile radius of u and if not you could try JB dedicated or intermodel as well. Good luck. Some sacrafice goes a long way in getting where u want to be but you must be willing. Hope it works out

unless your wife makes a lot of money, you're probably better off becoming a single income household once you get experience and find a decent job. if you live near chambersburg you can do well in intermodal, they have some odd schedules there too. i know someone in a similar situation and the whole coming home and watching the kid thing will never work driving a truck... it's not an 8 and done job. even if you have a set schedule, you will work up to 14 hours a day depending on things like traffic, breakdown and even being held up at a shipper/receiver.

i work a local job on the night shift and i usually have 1-3 hours when i get home in the morning before i have to go to sleep and an hour or so when i wake up before i go back.. if you can't get at least 6 hours of continuous sleep( and even that is a little low) you won't survive driving.

Thanks for the info. I had someone else comment about the job and tell me it is 6 days on the road, so that will not work at all. If I am going to be gone for 6 days, I can take a construction job a few hours away at twice the local driving pay and be home every weekend, almost guaranteed. I'd have to go with the money. I'm going to keep looking at driving jobs but I am probably going to have to take something else. Thanks for the info though

Look into LTL in your area. See if they have a dock to drive program setup.

You'd start off on the dock and they would train you to drive and start driving when positions opened up.

Jb has intermodel in that area of pa n its home daily with 2 days off every week and you decide your start time for jb. Your goin to average 9-12 hours daily though and you must have at least 6-12 months experience so you would have to suck it up otr for someone for a while than apply for it. But they also offer part time 2-3 days a week and you can still make $7-900 a week in 3 days but you might be sacraficing good benefits and in it just for a paycheck. But that could solve your problem with being with your family and getting enough sleep. Work fridays sat and sunday and have mon thru thurs off. Jb is always hiring in pa nj and ny because theres so much work. My account has the same 130 drivers since ive been here 4 years in ny account. Its not a turnover thing like people think. Its just a constant growing workload and they are always hiring. Intermodel in pa is a monster account and jb is the largest intermodel company in the U.S. so they do hire fairly easily for those accounts as long as you have clean record and 6 months minimum exp. so they can handle capacity. Hope thats helpful.

The closest terminal I think JBH runs out of is Carlisle and that's about 5 hours round trip. There really isn't a lot close to me that even considers new CDL's, Schneider is about it. There are a few others near or out of Bedford but they all require experience. Tons of ads from recruiters, tons of 'Lease until we bankrupt you' ads, and a few ads from mom and pop outfits that actually seem like honest people but still want a lot of experience driving (6 months plus). The small mom and pop outfits actually sound like they would be better to work for and I may find one and see if I can swing some other work and learn type arrangement.

I think I'd be okay if I can find a way to get 6 months in.

I never even thought of FedEx or UPS, that's a good idea. The others, I'm not sure if they have anything close to here but I'll look. The only reason Schneider has anything close is because of Walmart. Outside of that, there are no terminals close to where I live. At least for something where the mega carriers run out of. Mom and pops all day long though, they just want experience
