I'm thinking about getting a canine co-pilot. Pro/Cons, good breeds? I have a Golden at home but he's too old to climb in and out of the truck plus probably too big to be comfortable.

Get a picture of a dog, it'll be way easier
bottomdumpin, Straight Stacks, DeathByBanjo and 1 other person Thank this. -
The only advice I would have for you is to get a small to medium size dog that is already trained, unless you absolutely know what you are doing with them and know how to train a dog. Depends on what you like and what you can afford though. I would have to go with a miniature pinscher.

Staffordshire terrier, they catch a bad rap, but really any type of terrier is easy to potty train , they mind well and ride good. Very affectionate but normally 1 person dogs can become overprotective, but I consider a good thing.

I had never had a dog in the truck before and ended up adopting a 4 month old Australian Shepherd. He's been great, only one accident in the truck. He was sleeping and wet the bed like a little kid. He's 43 pounds now, not quite sure how big he's going to get.

Shih-Tzu. They are small, don't need much exercise, very smart, and (best of all) they do not shed and are naturally hypo-allergenic (very little dander). My wife and I rescued a Shih-Tzu that we found earlier this year and he is the best dog ever.

Any breed COULD be a good road dog...You definately just cant pick one up on your way to your drop and expect it to happen..
Get one, make friends with it, take him out and see...Just dont get bummed if he aint the one!!
I got 2 twin sister pitbulls, one would be so perfect out on the road, one would definately not..I got a princess, and a protector, lol
Good luck, take your time....finbyrd and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -
I took a Schipperke on the road for about a year before I went local. They are bred to be boat dogs in Holland so they adapt well to small moving spaces. I loved having her with me, she added life to the truck and forced me to get out and exercise every day.
Bob Dobalina Thanks this. -
Just please PLEASE whatever you do: clean up after your dog. I was at a place a couple of weeks ago doing a "double" drop/hook deal, juggling trailers around the lot. When I was all done and hooked to my loaded trailer, I was going around checking lights and tires and stuff when my foot slid a little on the pavement. I shined my flashlight on it and it was orange, so I thought oh, I stepped on a smashed pumpkin. Then I thought why would there be a smashed pumpkin at this warehouse? Then I smelled it. I had stepped in a big orange dogsh!t patty. At that point I wanted to start knocking on all the truck doors until I found the culprit and either make him clean it up, or smear the remainder all over his steps, door handles, and glad hands!
Instead, I just cussed a lot and cleaned it up with some sticks and water and the grass. Not the way I wanted to finish up my day. Nothing worse than stepping in orange dog diarrhea!Florida Playboy, finbyrd and bigkev1115 Thank this. -
I stepped on a smashed pumpkin?
