You guys are funny, pre-2000 trucks have an exemption to being hooked to the ECM but THAT'S ALL.
overall the ELD has to indicate movement of the vehicle, which can be done via GPS receiver. The problem is the FMCSA are buying into the BS that companies like PeopleNet and Qualcomm are saying - their systems can't adapt without special installation of additional sensors (like drive train sensors) which replace the ECM connection. -
I'm curious about this as well. If I can buy a newer glider registered as an older truck and not have to go on Elog,.. this is the route I will take.

I know the Qualcomms have already had an update to record vehicle movement. If you start moving the truck but the qualcomm doesn't put you on the drive line till 25 mph (for example) once it puts you on the drive line it back dates the time to when the truck first started moving. Only way around this is to manually put yourself on the drive line. For example, you drive out of a truck stop and stop at the exit and manually put yourself on the drive line before entering traffic and it will not include the time driving in the truck stop.

so if you run out of hours 60 miles from home and don't want to stop for the night you could stop the truck a few minutes before your time expires, go off duty, then drive under 25mph the rest of the way and manually move to the drive line when you pull in the driveway?

You know I was wondering that myself. How can they say we need more drivers when there doesn't seem to be enough freight (or parking) to go around as it is?mitmaks Thanks this.

different companies has different settings for distance, but I have driven 6 miles home on country roads by going under 25 and stopping every 2 miles to switch between off duty and sleeper birth to reset the counter.

there is always the option of logging off (might throw a red flag) or unpluggin and powering down (could cause a problem with the company for messing with the computer)

My company doesn't have the edit option, and I have friends that work for a larger company that doesn't have it, or a line 5 (off duty, personal conveyance driving). My company has a skip option once you reach a certain distance which is for limited personal use of the vehicle(food, shopping etc.) They watch to make sure you don't abuse it, if you do, they can turn it off on a truck by truck basis.
I love how people say "I don't cheat the paper, but I won't have a computer telling me when to drive"...they're both the same, paper tells you when you -can- drive, just the same as elog, not that you -have- to. It is totally up to the driver. And if you're not cheating paper, then you won't be cheating elog. I have never once had the thing sound an alarm, and in it's computer voice order me to start driving. And if dispatch would try to bully me, I use a word my 18 month old grandson understands. That word is NO. If I am tired, or didn't get enough rest for whatever reason, then a paper logbook or an elog won't make me move, and neither will a dispatcher 1000's of miles away.
I hated elog when I started them years ago, but I soon learned that logging to the minute, and my gps location automatically being recorded when I change duty made me change my mind. When I ran both,(paper being the legal and elog was considered to be instructional training) my elog ALWAYS had more hours available at the end of 8 days.dngrous_dime, glitterglue, roshea and 2 others Thank this.
