IMO, the number one thing is keeping your mind engaged. I've found that a radio talk show you can take at least some interest in, can be a fantastic tool when driving in the dark/overnight.

I usually turn the AC on and have something cold to drink. Other times its Sirius/XM. There been a few times I ran into a driver going same direction we both were dead tired and started BS ing back and forth and before I knew it I was where I needed to be wide awake

When I knew I was diriving all night, I would make sure to take a nap right before sun up, so when I get up after my nap, the Sun is up.. Kinda tricks your mind thinking it got a full night sleep and was ready for a full day of driving..
