I think you fail to realize is the "net" factor in what works and what doesn't. I've never ran my own numbers but what brought me to mercer was the fact that majority of the guys I talked to on the road and here on the forum had their own numbers and customers and told me they'll never go back for the simple fact that mercer has the volume of freight they couldn't get, let alone the rates. And although 2.43 per mile might not be a lot to sum but that's what my truck made on 590 miles with fuel costing me 1.45 a gallon on my last trip. I talk to independents currently and most of who had direct freight got underbid by another company which in turn got them running off load boards and brokers. In my own opinion if you don't have direct customers then what's the point. And living in Florida if you can find direct customers with volume that pays over 2.75 per mile then my hats off to you. You better go ask some of these guys over here and at a land star how can they afford a big house costing more than $200k with nothing but cheap freight

I really don't see that they do have much invested. Your offered the load if you don't want it then it goes to the next soldier in line. You pull up to the fuel pump your wallet opens up. You buy tires your wallet opens up. You need maintence your wallet opens up etc etc. I see the middle man coming out real well from where I'm standing

I can tell you how. It's called a mortgage I know how the merry goes round. I've had and have direct customers I will haul a broker load and it'll meet acceptable terms or it'll go to the clowns. It's not volume that a single truck operator needs to be concerned with. You can only do so much hold the rates up and provide consistent service. If you man wants to sign a 30 year note on a 200k home and work his eyes out for Landstar that's not a measure of success

That's great. You put the numbers out there I'm assuming wanting a comment or applause. I wouldnt put up with owning a truck if it wasn't doing anymore than that. Seems like your true talent is in painting. I know you'll take offense but I really believe I'd capitalize on that.
