    So, here's the story.

I work for small trucking company exactly one year now. They helped me acquire my CDL and I have not been with any other company yet. The company's and my home base is in Chicago, but we have 2 warehouse locations, one is in Chicago, IL and one in Stockton, CA. Both locations have local drivers. My original work as I was hired was to drive local/regional in Chicago area, paid hourly and home most nights and all weekends. But as time went on I was offered to drive between Chicago and Stockton, CA (paid by mile). As I would get to Stockton, my boss liked to keep me there locally for couple weeks, up to a month (paid hourly, same as Chicago) on weekdays and then on weekends, as we didn't have work, he would pay me for a hotel, which was OK by me. After sometime in Stockton I would go back to Chicago, again paid by mile, and then work in Chicago paid by hour for few weeks and go back to Stockton, so on and so forth.

Now, sometime ago, Stockton location has lost a driver and they are quite short on drivers so I have been spending more time in Stockton, working locally, plus it's winter time in Chicago so this isn't really a bad option for these few months. Recently, without any particular reason my boss told me he will no longer pay for my hotel on weekends for the time I am in Stockton. Which really got me upset. My question to you guys is what should be my stance about this decision, as at this point I am either forced to pay for my own hotel or spend Saturday and Sunday sitting in a truck at a truck stop. Is his decision OK by me? Am I entitled to some kind of layover pay? What should I do?

Thank you for taking your time to advice me in this matter.

That would be covered in the paperwork you signed for them. Each company is different.

Just my personal opinion but here goes.... They in no way shape or form are required to pay for your hotel room unless its in some written form in your contract or such.

With that being said I think what they are doing is seeing what they can get away with now. I would tell them if they aren't going to pay for my room now then I need to get back to Chicago and I will not be coming back to run local at all. Some companies get the attitude that you will just roll over and take it. You running local in Ca and Chicago is helping them out. Remind them of this and see where it goes.

I would try to have a heart to heart with your boss in Stockton reminding him, that you are providing a service to him and that sitting in a truck stop all weekend is not something you are comfortable with. After all it seems your doing him the favor.

Listen to what he says, and se if there is a compromise, maybe moving to a lower cost motel might work for both of you.

Good communication regarding expectations on both ends always makes for a better relationship, whether friends, work or marriage.

If that doesn't work you might try telling your boss in Chicago you no longer want to run local in Stockton.

You might be able to escalate the matter to your boss's boss or HR department, sleeping in a truck is kind of a given in OTR, but this is a special circumstance.

Most of all don't get upset, that helps no one, least of all you. Some guys choose to argue with their dispatchers, I have always (well 98% of the time :) )calmly explained this doesn't work for me, and no this is not a threat, but if we cannot resolve the situation, then I will likely need to find another place to work.

If you take that tact though, I would do some research to ensure you are going to end up in a better place.

    Good Luck!

    This ^.

You're there to earn a paycheck, not lose money for the "privilege" of working for them.....

since it is local I figured a day cab. I have a cousin on a dedicated account a week out at a time. He is in a day cab and they put him up in a more than decent hotel every night.

Tell him you'll stay in the truck and idle all weekend. He'll get to decide if he'd rather pay for 40-50 gallons of fuel or 40-50 bucks per night for a cheap motel. My guess is he'd prefer option B.

You need to get a girlfriend in CA so you can crash at her place while you're there. I know the quality of the people in Stockton leaves a lot to be desired, but surely there's at least a couple of good women there that don't have neck tattoos or knife scars.
