My understanding is Cricket is good in the local area where I live but doesn't work good once I get out of that area.

Not to be a Smart A... so please don't take it that way... my basic rule in cell phone service and COVERAGE , especially for OTR, is " you get what you pay for".
If you're getting "half price"... expect half service.
I've got a buddy that just left Verizon (which was bad enough ) for a cut rate co. , and now his service is pathetic. All he does is get dropped, or you get his VM, bc he has no signal.
Just my 2cents. Hope it helps -
Personally, I enjoy AT&T for nearly 10 years now....reliable and good service most everywhere with good customer service. I do have a backup mifi device with Verizon, but I hate their customer service, but it serves my necessity for extra data. AT&T recently allowing you to get unlimited data plan again if you also have DirecTV, which is a pretty good deal. I agree with jammer910Z that "you get what you pay for"
rachi Thanks this. -
I have Verizon for voice/text and I am happy with their coverage but their data is rather costly... Was thinking of getting T-Mobile for an unlimited plan but I may need to check into that att deal now. I doubt I need directv in the truck but maybe after the wife joins me it might be an option.

Cricket is owned by AT&T and uses their network.
.Metro PCS is owned by Tmobile and uses their network.
.Total Wireless is, I believe, owned by TracFone and uses the Verizon network.
.The following companies are using the Sprint network: Boost Mobile, Kajeet, Ting and Virgin mobile. -
This, Cricket is owned by Att and uses they towers. The coverage is good, but internet is slow
-
While this may be true, the real question would now be , "do they have reciprocal tower use agreements with rival carriers on these bargain rate phone plans like they do on their flagship brands?".
Very doubtful. That's why the coverage is much more spotty. -
I've had both sprint and verizon running all over the country and have had good coverage with both.

When I first got t-mobile it suck so bad I also got a version jet pack for internet. But they have been improving and I see more and more areas getting cover.
Now, if you're out west, they basically nonexistent. I still use my jet pack but tmobile offer unlimited data so it's slowly being use less and less.
There's some areas that I will get drop calls and once in a while drop Internet but after a minute it will reconnect to their towers.
