Well, to go against the grain apparently, I'll respectfully disagree with the other posters so far.....With a caveat.
I would, given certain conditions. Why? Well, because that's actually the chance that someone is about to take on me. I won't go into specifics, but in general I've been driving over 15 years, and due to certain life circumstances, I decided to go back OTR after about 10 years running local. Now granted, my deal kinda fell into my lap, but until it did I hadn't found the right situation to make it worth my while to do it.
Now however, this person contacted me and asked if I was still thinking about OTR as they were about to add a second rig and needed a driver. Yes, he is taking a risk, but so am I as well. We both discussed our needs and intentions, and decided it will work for us. I will be making a higher percentage than average, but (at least IMHO) he is getting an above average hand that will take good care of his equipment and intend to run hard, but more importantly, SMART.

I would suggest you decide on a certain amount you need to have the truck making, and what drivers you interview must agree (in writing IMO) to whatever stipulations you set forth. However, just to reflect reality......It will most certainly NOT be easy finding the right driver for your needs, but we ARE out here.

    Good luck.

^ This is exactly what I am getting at. I know that there will be many drivers who are fed up with the forced dispatch or long waiting and being treated like a driver...who have no motivation to do better. And then some who would want to escape all that but dont want to be in the hassle that comes along with running under your authority.

This is were I come in. I provide what the driver wants, of course to the right person and they run on their own.

I still need to work with number to see what would be the correct compensation for the driver. Paying them a percentage of after fuel net would push them to be easy at wasting gas.

Not if you figure in some incentive or "bonus" for achieving a reasonable mpg....;)

Like I said, I'm just entering into such a deal myself, as the truck driver. But I'd be happy to let you know of anything that we find works or doesn't as we move forward.

Long long ago this is exactly what i have done....my friends "boss" gave me a little phone book and he did break down the numbers and told me how to do make it work.

I was young hungry for dough and had the desire to see every corners of the country, it work good for both of us, one day my friend told me all right kid we could take your training wheels off you are now O/O stuff get off the nest and fly on your own you will make it....

Even though my dad had trucks that learning process was and still today is one of the best experience i ever had.

But now being in the positions of handing the keys to someone else, i admit good candidates are hard to come by....

This is similar to a deal I have with the O/O i subcon for, also... but he has established accounts, so i don't have to self-dispo. Guess I could if need be, but I'll let him do the extra work, as he sees fit. Six years and doing fine here; I'll let him run the show.

You just need to find the guy that is on his way to o/o and wants the practical experience of running himself.
