Hello all, New1here. First, let me say this board has been a great wealth of knowledge to someone like me looking to get into driving (as a second career). Now I'm a member and ready to get started.
I'm in the Southeast and am now enrolled to begin shortly in school. I have my CDL A permit with endorsements for Doubles/Triples, Tanker and Haz-Mat. My MVR is clean, have no criminal record and have my DOT medical, Passport and TWIC card. Now where to go??? Here's a short list of flatbed and Van companies I'm interested in (no particular order)...
Flatbed - TMC, Maverick and Melton
Van - Averitt, Roehl, Prime, Schneider
Welcome all comments and suggestions. There are many good companies out there and I'm open to any that I haven't listed. Regarding Flatbeds, I don't mind the hard work. Good way to get out, stretch and get some exercise.
Thanks in advance!

How often do you want to be home? Prefer staying in one region or true otr?

You won't do dry van with prime , they are refrigerated , flater bed , and tanker

At least you are skipping looking at the worst of the bottom feeders. So that shows that you really did do some reading on here.Schneider is not that bad, check with them before you start a school though, they do not accept all of them, and you do not want to do it over. I cannot remember if Crete is hiring new drivers anymore, they are not bad, with good equipment, APU's and better mileage rates than most.
I am just glad not to see England, Swift, Covenant, Werner or some of the other really bad ones on the list. Makes things easier.New1here Thanks this. -
Crete's trucks are too slow; governed at 62 mph.
Here's 3 excellent companies & they all hire new cdl grads. Some websites aren't up to date and may have "experience required", but that's incorrect; they hire new cdl grads.
Abilene Motor Express - vans & reefers
Freymiller
Magnum Ltd.
@New1here You'll do a LOT of west coast/pacific northwest with these companies; especially Abilene.
You listed Melton & that's ok for flatbed. Cypress Truck Lines is ok for flatbed.
I'd take Averitt off the list.Last edited: Mar 25, 2016

Submit job applications during the first day or first week of school. Don't wait any longer. This gives you time to sift through the job offers and make a decision and start work at graduation.

I would decide on the company(s) you are interested in then apply and let them guide you as to what they require. You sound like you have been at this for a while, that is good. Take your time and make a good decision. Good luck!
New1here Thanks this.
