I was in the wrong forum, but my question is which trailer is the best to have if you were buying a trailer to lease to Mercer? Flat, step deck, conastoga, 48, 53, spread axle, tri axle?
Also I live in Ga and what can I expect on loads, I talked to Dawn today and she kept talking about Ca loads since I have a 2014 truck, what can I expect my check to be avg, after fuel and ins deductions , since I would be new to Mercer would I only get the bad loads on the load board that know one else will haul , or how is the politics over there about that? Thanks in advance, I know what she told me today but I just want to hear it from the guys that do it everyday and will be honest with me before I spend the money on a trailer . Thanks again guys

Flatbed. I'll let the boys answer the rest of the dimensional questions.
Read the main thread for tips and tricks on getting in and out of Cali and working the boards. You are in charge of your destiny. Mercer pays 75% to the truck of linehaul plus 100% of fuel surcharge on loaded miles. As for tarp pay, etc, the boys will chime in. (My husband is seeing the light. But he's still boxy. And rightly, he wants to pay for the equipment straight out, and replacing a trailer tire sort of put a dent in the plan. He made a choice I wouldn't have made, but truck/trailer upkeep is his department, not mine.) Our direct deposit hits the bank the morning after the settlement posts. They aim to settle all loads within 8 business hours of submission.
Average check.....uh, it's what you make it. There's guys here who work 40 weeks of the year, some less. Depends on what you have going at home. Van and FB are two very different monsters. Van side, we are doing ok. -
Thanks dragontamerbrat, hope y'all still do good!

It is typically agreed that flatbed is the way to go. I started pulling a flat here almost a year and a half ago. I've done great except over the last 5 months or so I got super lazy. With a FB most will say 48'. I do know a few agents that have customers that want 53' but I think for you to build up that customer base would take some time. Doable don't get me wrong but it would take some time to see a return on your investment. As for Conastoga as I'm having the system put on my trailer in a week or so (I'm lazy), I have to say there is not a lot of call for them. Once again you have to make yourself known to agents to really get them to pursue those loads. So a basic 48' spread is a pretty safe setup and most top earners run that.
GA isn't bad. I don't care for it but freight wise it's an ok place to live. I wouldn't worry about that. Don't worry about CA, that's it's own monster and if you don't learn the system out there it can eat you alive. If you decide to come over and want to run west just let me know. Better yet read our main forum. Myself and others have tried to explain that beast.
Avg check all you will hear is crickets. Not because we don't make checks but because we all run different. One guy might avg $2500 a check another $500. It can be deceiving because the $500 guy might do that 7 times to every $2500 check. We all have different fixed bills too so you probably won't even get a vague answer from us. We don't get paid weekly like most outfits. We get paid at the completion of every run so for some that can be several times a day. Or once every couple of days or weeks. If you go depict deposit it's generally in your bank the morning after you empty.
Bad loads as a newbie? Only if you agree to them. It happens but only because new guys don't know any better. There is a learning curve and everyone is bound to make mistakes while they learn the ins and outs. But in the end it is set up to be fair. Best to read our main thread (pull up a chair it's long).
Good luck to you.Shortthouse Thanks this. -
CJndatrucker, thank you so much for your help and being honest, I hope you were serious when you said you would help me if needed and I appreciate that in this day and time, we need more true knights of the road like it was in the day like you. Thanks again I will check out the other links.

Ok, now that you are in the right place. I live between savannah and Macon, Ga. Been here 5 years pulling flat. You are in the Atlanta area. Ga is no problem, , but. Seriously , read the 1600age thread, and the why do some fail thread, you will be ahead of the game. Fact is the guys who say there is not ways to maximize the mercer system haven't been here all that long. Go with the system. And not what you wish the system to be, and you will be fine.
